Well today was a shocker, I just got laided off after almost 40 years (39 year 5+ months) ! restructuring economy Yadda Yadda.

Well it will be dificult for me to find another job. I was very senior and very specailized. Might be a forced retirement..

Well pray for me and wish me the best of luck.

Looks like HT -stage 2 upgrade for Pioneer Plasma isi on hold, maybe permanently.

Midcow, I am so sorry to hear that. Sucks that a man as "senior" as you were with that company gets the shaft, but it is becoming all too common. You have the expertise and get paid well for that expertise but management deems you make too much money and your the first too go, so that some kid right out of sollege (wit far less experience) can be hired instread.

I wish you all the best in finding a better job.

That's crazy. It's because of stories like this coupled with my personal experience of getting laid off that I feel absolutely 0 corporate loyalty. But seriously, after nearly 40 years, I can't imagine what that would feel like. I really hope that something good will come of this for you and that now that one door has shut, another will open.

My thoughts are with you.

Regards,

Chris

That really sucks man, sorry to hear it. Hang in there. Every place I've worked to the pinnacle of my skill set, I always get laid off too. They needed 3 guys to do the amount of work I was doing...yeah that's cost effective  I actually quit the next job and it took 6 people to do the job that just 2 of us were doing

I was laid off from a department in my hospital and was immediatly hired by another department (at the time I had three departments who all wanted to hire me) and what was funny is the department that fired me (not for my work performance but because two supervisors disliked me because I'm not a relgious whack job) anyway, this department had to hire five people to replace my one job and none of those guys worked out and so now they want me back and I tell them they can't afford me and they still call me for "assistance" in programs they have no idea how to operate and I tell them to "bite me." :D getting liad off sucks, but as mentioned when one door closes, another one opens up. I hope they give you a good severance package though.

You can now join me in my quest for the perfect post:

From here on in I will assume that all your posts will have been made wearing underwear only and probably while drinking beer even if it's not noon.

Sorry to hear that MC2. It sucks and I feel for ya.

I'm really sorry to hear about this, Cow. The sudden and inexpected notices are by far the worst to deal with. I actually got my notice in the mail while I was off during the Christmas holidays. I'll know by the end of this week if I'll be working any more or not. If you've got the means to retire after 40 years, relax and enjoy it if you can.

My sympathies and sincerest hopes for you to turn this lemon into lemonade, MC2. It surely gives an empty feeling to you. Hopefully there is a brighter side to this and you can find another job soon or that you have good retirement benefits.

Perhaps join me in early-but-creative retirement. Is there something you've been aching to do, but didn't have the time? Are there any hobbies you have that you can turn to for profit? (I found writing and selling a few of my books to be invigorating.)

Keep tough on this, buddy. You now just have a new job. Even if it's finding a new employer, do your best.

Best wishes.

Well, that sucks. If it's any consolation, just know that you're in some very good company.

Good luck.

LOL i might become a car salesman :D or an audio consultant :D :D or just chat on Audioholics, listen to music, watch TV, watch DVDs , rock in my rocking chair, read books, mess with electronics in the garage an walk my dog!

I have a positive attitude and am going to have a couple of cold 33 degree beverages

Take care and THANKS to you all allthe other audioholic friends.

I think you have the right attitude. Great companies and ventures have started with a single person getting laid off. I'm sure you'll be happy wherever you go, since happiness is found between the ears and no other place on earth.

Times aren't getting any less tough. We laid off a few people here, and we are a very small company. One was a guy we just recently hired in a new office all by himself and I felt really bad when I saw the boss go into the conference room with him and let him know. Two of my friends got laid off the other day at my former company; people who I worked with for a long time and am good friends with, both were there for many years. Another friend who has been at her job for about 30 years also just got "early retirement" a few weeks ago, but she got an excellent package to do so and she is actually quite pleased. Three IT guys at a company that I support were also given packages to leave. The economy just sucks big time right now.

My retirement funds (old 401K, current 401k and an IRA) are pretty ugly right now with the markets the way they are, but I could live off of them for a while.

Sorry to hear this MC but you have the right attitude. When us men lose our jobs we feel bad regardless if we are financially sound or not. Our jobs and titles are a big part of who we are and when it gets taken away it hurts. You will go through a lot of emotions in the next few weeks but keep your head held high and keep busy. It took me 6 months to find a good job after I was laid off last year and they were very trying times for me even though the money wasn't a huge issue. I will put you in my prayers tonight...hang in there buddy.

Mid, I am really sorry to hear this news my friend. You are a very good guy and I have appreciated your kind words spoken to me over the last year. I will be sure to keep you and your family in my prayers. Hang in there as it will hopefully get better. If there is anything I can do otherwise, then please do not hesitate to let let me know.

Cheers,

Phil

Seriously, I have no life.
You have had a nasty shock, but you will be OK. The ones we really have to look out for are those starting out and especially those in mid life with a lot of family responsibilities.

I just home we can catch up to this train, that seems to be accelerating down hill by the day, before it goes over the ravine I don't think it is a certainty by any means.

We have had far too many posts like yours over the recent past. All Americans need to watch each others backs.
