It will be okay. ;)

I checked out the link and noticed that this rec'r has HDMI 1.3(repeater) and would like a brief explanation of repeater. I forgot and am too lazy to go looking for the answer.
A receiver or pre/pro with "repeating architecture" can process audio, video, or both. Switching or pass-thru doesn't add any processing.

Powered Zone 2 Question

I am looking to upgrade my receiver, and am considering the Onkyo TX-SR805.

However, one of the features that I am seeking is Zone 2 outs, preferably powered. The Onkyo website indicates that the 805 has a powered Zone 2,but other descriptions seem to indicate that the powered Zone 2 is driven by redirecting 2 of the main (7.1) channels.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Thank you in advance.

Like most AVR's that have Zone 2, the 805 uses the surround back amp section for this unless you're sending a line level signal to the second zone. That leaves you with a 5.1 in your main room and a powered zone 2. The owner's manual can be found here.

What is your goal in doing this?

Are you trying to have 2 sets of fronts playing the same signal?

Your goal could probably be accomplished if you paired the 805 with the right equipment. The 805 has pre-amp out that signal could be sent to two sets of speakers with 2 (2channel amps)

Are you trying to have different music play on a different zone?
Get a separate stereo receiver.

Powered Zone 2 on the Onkyo TX-SR805

I'm looking to have a separate zone in the kitchen, effectively having two pairs of fronts. Mostly to be able to play music through the whole house.

It started as an idea that got into my head when I saw "powered zone 2" as a feature of the 805, which I was looking at anyway. I've got a pair of Klipsch SS.5's that I upgraded that I thought I could wire in the kitchen without having to buy anything in addition to the 805.

I also started thinking about the possibility of outdoor speakers for the deck. Not that this is happening anytime soon, since I live in Albany, NY.

My main goal is movies though, and I don't want to give up my 7.1, even if it's really 5.1 most of the time.

Sounds like my best option may be to get the 805, and an exteral amp or two for the other zones. When I'm serious about this, I'm sure I'll be asking all about amps!

As always, thank you to everyone for the feedback. I'm new to this audio world, and am having a blast reading and learning and listening.

If you want to go external amp for the fronts then a 705 may be sufficient, but with his deal go for his 805 it will be great for you.

I find most of us don't end up doing our plans. And 805 is an amazing receiver. Make sure you ventilate it get a small low db fan for it and have a good strong rack. If you do that it will be a great piece of equipment that will give you plenty of POP. with 50lbs you can drive a lot of speakers.

I don't personally have any interest in the 805, I was just offering some info about it's capabilities with Zone 2 et al.

I've got to save up a few $ first or get my tax return. Once that's done, I will probably go looking for an 805. No rush, so I'll be able to bargain hunt. My Marantz 4001 is doing the trick pretty well. I do have a friend who volunteered to give it a good home if/when I upgrade. (What a swell guy!)

I think I'm going to have to upgrade my rack at that point. 50 lbs.!

Wish I could buy now - this seems like a good price...
