I have an HD TV, but up unitl now i've only had regular cable tv. I have an PS3 for blu-rays and an antenna that I could pick up fox and some other stations in HD. I have recently moved and don't get regular cable for free and can't pick up signals through my antenna. So I'm thinking about going through Charter to get digital cable. Do I need ask for a HD cable box to get HD channels? And do I need to pay more for any HD programs? Will I get any HD channels if I only get digital cable?

With comcast HD is about $10 a month. $5 for the programing $5 for the cablebox rental.

I would assume that charter works the same way.

Go to charter.net and click the TV link. You can see their programing tiers and get pricing info there.

Well I think I've found what I need to get, but they want to charge 30 bucks to hook up the cable and 50 bucks to hook up the internet. Anybody have luck at getting them to waive those fees? Seems rediculous, all they gotta due is come plug it in.

Play a competitive bid against them.

Sometimes -- you can talk to them on the phone and play thier competition agaisnt them and get them to forego the install fees.

For example, " .. Yes I understand you have a 30 connect fees and another 50 to hook up to the Internet I wall just talking to AT&T uVerse and they are offering me a similar deal with no installation charges. I think I am going to go with them because I won't have to pay the $80 in connection fees you are going to charge me. I really wanted to try you servcie but you know with today's uVerse.... Is there anyway you could help me out ??"

It is worth a try ;)

Good luck!

My step-son installs cable and finds people that think like you hilarious. You don't want to know what he calls them. Who pays the guy that "just comes and plugs it in? Who pays the cable guy for his time to come to your house? Who pays for his truck? Who pays him for the time it takes him to "just plug them in" and make sure everything is functioning properly?

Now, if you have comcast, you could buy a self install cable modem kit and pick up a cable box at a local service center. Then it's only your time that's invested, not theirs. Maybe your company offers that?

You just better hope that turning your sercice on doesn't require a trip up the pole. Remember, they are not required by law to have a live feed run to each house.

Seems to me that the cable company could be paying him from part of the hundred dollars a month I will be paying for cable and internet, instead of charging me another 80 bucks, to yes, just plug it in. There is already cable running to my new apartment, all they gotta do is come set it up. I was not suggesting their there work does not merit compensation.

Yes, no, maybe...

First off your TV must have a QAM tuner, for HD on cable. This is different than over the air HD which is ATSC format

Depending on the local cable system you may receive a few or several HD and digital cable channels without a cable box.

You will not receive a guide, any premium channels, and the channels probably will not "map" the their proper channel numbers. That is to say your local CBS station instead of being on channel 5 might be something like 357-6. Makes it a real P.I.A. as you have to scan for channels and write them down. Our local Comcast will randomly change the channel mappings a couple times a year just to make it a real P.I.A.

Well I went ahead and ordered up the cable yesterday. I went for the whole deal. HD-DVR w/ HD access, HBO, showtime, cinemax, starz, plus some other movie channels and high-speed internet. $110 a month for a year. Not a bad deal. It gets hooked up on monday. And I got them to install the cable for free, they are still charging $50 for the internet install, but atleast they threw me something.
