Okay, so I just bought a TV (Samsung LN46A750), which I'll be picking up Saturday. I have a Nintendo Wii, standard DirecTV cable and a standard DVD player. I also have 2 JBL floor standing speakers, a JBL center as well as a subwoofer. I'm looking into purchasing the Yamaha 663, 563 or the 463. I'm just not sure which one to get.

What I want to do is hook everything up to the receiver and have everything I currently have (DVD player, Wii, etc.) play sound through the speakers I currently have right now. I am planning on purchasing a PS3 later, and maybe a blu-ray player as well. Two other speakers also. I want to hook everything up to the receiver with as little cables as possible, as far as component, composite and HDMI. If I hook up the PS3 and blu-ray player to any of the receivers I'm thinking of purchasing through HDMI, will it release sound through the speakers? What about component cables for the Wii being hooked up to the receiver?

I'm sorry, I'm not very tech savy when it comes to HT stuff so forgive me if I'm asking very stupid questions. Thanks to anyone reading the post and thanks to anyone willing to help me out!

Welcome!

I'd go with the 663 myself as it has the HD decoders built in. The PS3 can decode and send HD formats in PCM over HDMI, but most newer blu-ray players are going bitstream so if you buy one down the line, you'll need a receiver that can decode the signal.

Get the 663, it is a very nice receiver and will do everything you want it to do.

I also vote for the 663 although a 563 will suit the PCM over HDMI needs if you have a PS3. You mentioned transcoding (putting component, composite, etc. in all going to HDMI out). AFAIK, you will need the 663 and not the 563 to do transcoding even if you don't need the high res audio decoding of the 663. Any reason you're sold on Yammy and not HK, Denon, Onkyo, Marantz or Pioneer for your receiver?

I agree with this. I would not buy anything less than the RX-V663 at this point because of the audio formats.

The only problem is the 663 only has two hdmi in.

Yes, that is unfortunate. But if one needs more HDMI inputs later, one can buy an HDMI switch box. (The Oppo HDMI switch box is highly regarded.) But one cannot easily add new audio formats.
