I do appreciate your offer Chris as that is nice of you. One driver I am impressed with is the 12" Infinity Kappa Perfect sub. Been thinking about doing one in a sealed cabinet with lots of bracing using the Oaudio amp. Perhaps, that may be a good starting point. BTW, none of my gear has sold so it looks like getting out if off the table for now.

Cheers,

Phil
I don't suggest this driver in sealed applications.

For sealed, the Eclipse SW8200 in a minimum 3 cubic foot box paired with a minimum 500 WRMS amp and at least one parametric band is my suggestion. The O Audio 500 BASH amp fits the bill. The SW8200 only costs a little more, but it will work superbly in sealed application(s). The SW8200 has a rare motor that makes it suited to substantial output at 25Hz with very low distortion in a sealed application. It is a 12" driver, but has more linear displacement than most 15" drivers(!).

But I thought you wanted something with super high efficiency? None of the drivers I have recommended so far would fit that bill. I was thinking of something with a minimum 95db/1watt/1meter sensitivity so that you could achieve high SPL with low power, as you made a big deal about not having sufficient circuits earlier.

OK Chris. For some reason, I am fascinated with the Kappa Perfect driver. If you believe the Eclipse would be better in a sealed enclosure, then I am all for it. I am not aware of any drivers that offer that kind of sensitivity. Sounds like you do-so what do you have in mind? If I don't end up selling my LFM-1Pluses, then I will need something that will work with them. Maybe this weekend I will take a few pics of the lay-out with dimensions. This may help give you an idea of what is needed. Or, do you have any other ideas?

Well, I need budget first. My concept will be to simply use larger diameter, higher sensitivity drivers. If you can facilitate the cabinet size, even high quality pro-audio 18" woofer(s) could work. A couple of these in large ported cabinets that are properly designed could get high output down to 35Hz or so -- at huge SPL levels -- with just 100-200 Watts. Or at a smaller size alternative, and a little more cost, something like decent sensitivity 18" drivers of more conventional origin for home hi fi use, like Maelstrom X 18" units in sealed cabinets. Just as an example, a couple of Mael-X 18" units, each in a 3 cubic foot sealed enclosure, can produce 115-120 dBs at 35Hz in a large room, corner loaded, with only 100 watts to each! A solid 100-200 watt per channel amplifier is all you need. You can use the Dayton 3 cubic foot pre-fab cabinets. They look to be 'just' big enough to mount the 18" drivers in, and net volume would still be sufficient for your purposes. You need to use a parameteric E.Q. on the subs to get a smooth response - to remove the peak caused by the small internal volume. Not a problem.

At about $600 each including shipping(I'm not including an amplifier in this estimate - but you can get an AudioSource AMP ONE for $150 that will output a true 100 x 2 into 4 Ohms), you would have subs far more capable than your Outlaw subs. To be fair, you would probably have a MINIMUM of 4-5x the SPL, using the 100-200 watts per driver, and this would be absolutely distortion free output, as you would barely even get the Mael-X drivers to move, much less leave their linear motor-suspension excursion range.

All you have to do is order the parts, cut a hole in each cabinet for the driver, install some binding posts, hook up the wires and screw/mount the drivers into the cabinets, which come pre-assembled and pre-painted(texture black). It's hardly even DIY. :)

Check on the availability of the Mal-X drivers though, I'm pretty certain there is an extended wait time for them.

If they are on a very extended back order, I will search for another alternative for him, that is, if he was interested in this concept to begin with(which I await his reply....)....

Chris, to be honest it all sounds good. However, my funds are tight as I am trying to get my LCD paid off. Time is running out on me and as such need to get it paid off. If not, then the compounded interest will be added.

Also, I prefer to stay with a 12" or even a 15" driver. I can get really good deals from the likes of Alpine, Kicker, Diamond, Crossfire, and Lightning Audio to name a few. If I can use one of their drivers, that will save me some money. Have any other ideas?

Cheers,

Phil

Okay, I have found an alternate to the 18" Mael-X driver.

The 15" AE AV15 (LINK) is the solution. I will be used in the 3 cubic foot Dayton cabinet, and a flared 4" diameter port, 15" long. Leaving net volume around 2.5-2.6 cubic feet. The port is small - but since you are using a very low power amplifier - this is not an issue. This is geared to be an easy to build, compact size high output design with very high efficiency.

The extension will be -3 dB, about 35Hz and -6 dB at about 30Hz. These are free field. In room, -3 dB around 30Hz, -6db around 25Hz, is to be expected.

With just 100 watts RMS, in a moderate size room, corner loaded, two of these subwoofers together will produce about 115-120dB at 30Hz, and 120-125 dB at 40Hz and above.

You won't have any 20Hz response, but this is a compromise. If you want lower response, you will have to DIY the cabinets instead of using pre-fabricated units.

Total cost per sub (not including amplifier) would around $510-$540 w/shipping.

I can not recommend any of the brands you want me to; I am recommending the ideal solution for your dilema. This will allow you to have no worries on the electrical load demands in your system, and will blow away your retail subwoofers with ease, producing several times the SPL, and with lower distortion.

Thanks Chris for all of your help. Right now, my funds are tight. I have no choice but to pay off my 42" LCD or the compounded interest will be added to my balance. Once I do that, I will re-evaluate at that time and go from there. Appreciate your efforts. As such, I will be in touch!

Cheers,

Phil

I may if I can get the rest sold. Of course, you would have to wait a bit before that happens. Not sure if you could deal with that or not. If so, please PM me and let me know and we will go from there.

Phil
