Best Subwoofer for $300-$400?

It's definitely subject to personal taste. I went back and forth between buying a cylinder or a box for a couple of years, but I'm very happy that I decided to give the cylinder a try. I like the look of it. I had a black box before this (B&W ASW1000) that was probably about the size of the SVS PB12-NSD, and the visual impact of this sub is quite a bit higher, IMO (you can look at the difference in my post here). I have the Ultra, so it's about 11" taller than yours - but otherwise should look the same.

As a matter of fact, I did. I put in the movie "300" and played the opening scene with the wolf. He could not believe it. He sat back and said that it was awesome and that it sounded just like he was in a movie theater. Now he wants to come over and watch movies at my house.

No, I thought about it after WmAx suggested that I build one but that just isn't something that I would feel comfortable doing. I probably would have been second guessing that decision and later wondering how my self-built sub compared to others that I was looking at. I'm definately not disappointed with the SVS although maybe, as WmAx said, I could have built one that blew the doors off the SVS for similar cost. Oh well, I think that the SVS was worth the price for the performance that it gives.

After having the 16-46+ for that little bit and now the PB13---I can say it's really six of one, half-a-dozen the other...pick your poison really. They each have their advantages--although the PB13 should probably come with an orthopedic surgeon for when your done moving it around...

I used my Yamaha RX-V750's auto calibration to set all of my speakers and the subwoofer after which I turned up the db on the sub from -6.5db as it was set to -5db for a little more feel. Does that sound too low to set this sub at? I later used a Radio Shack digital spl meter to test the entire system using the Yamaha's test tones and learned that the fronts, center and sub were all about 83-85db while the rears were reading about 80-82db. Does this sound correct? If not, what adjustments can I make. The crossover on the sub is being handled by the receiver (at 80 hz) rather than the setting on the sub itself which is what I read should be the case.

They should all be set to the same dB level, so, either turn the fronts down or turn the surrounds up. I would probably do the later since most of us tune at 85dB as recommended by the RS meter.

I had it, sold it (to my buddy) and now I have on order a SVS pb10-nsd

I liked how the 15" punched at around 35hz, but for a 15" I expected more pounding. Then I decided to pull out the driver and called Cadence. They basically said it was a entry level 15" dayton. I was kind of sad to spend 400.00 on a entry level sub with a nice cabinet, and the digital amp I never heard of. The SvS 10" is heavier then my cadence and I expect the quality of fit/finish and sound will be better then my cadence was.
