I feel so violated!

Well, recently I went out of town to visit some family (my wife's side of the family) up north. It was the week of Christmas. My side of the family was still here at home so I had my sister dog-sit for me while I was gone. When I got back I found out that 2 of my brother-in-laws were monkeying around with my audio system while I was gone. I guess I should just be glad they didn't break anything. Apparently, they were playing back the material at extreme volume levels. Then, when they couldn't get it working right, one of them said it was a crappy system and then they just sat around making fun of it. What irritated me was that they never got my permission to do any of this. They just started playing around with it. What made me even madder was that afterwards they just sat around laughing and making fun of it. I'm not one to go around bragging about my things, but in all honestly, my system is 10 times better then their crappy systems in their homes. I only found out about it because my sister was nice enough to tell me about it once I got home. I actually ended up getting stuck in Cleveland for 2 days due to bad weather. What great news to come home to! Anyway, I just felt violated, like someone just came into my home with a total disregard for my personal property, and did it without my permission. Anyway, I just felt like I needed to vent to someone and thought you guys would understand where I'm coming from. :(

Look at the bright side... at least they didn't blow anything... Next time you go to their house be sure to point out the many shortcomings of their systems. Also sorry you got stuck in Cleveland for two days... :D

That is just not cool at all. Next time hide the remote and unplug the system and turn off the breaker that way it saves you money (from the system not pulling power), safe from power outages/lightning and idiots.

I really can't think of anything that would piss me off more.

Good or not, my HT is my pride and joy. Nobody except my girl friend, who's afraid of it, touches it without permission, period. especially at extreme levels.
I play it loud, but I know what to listen for as far as when to stop pushing it.

Ask if you can take their vehicles for a test drive on the highway, in first gear. Better yet don't ask first.

Next time just take a few of the power cords with you, that way they won't be able to mess with it.

Yeah, one of them has a HTIB, the other has some cheap JBL's. Nothing against JBL. They make some great speakers. But the ones he has are some cheap vinal looking one's with cheap push-pin connectors on the back. Normally, I wouldn't make fun of a setup like that. They were probably not bad for the price. But he thinks they are so great. But really, those things aren't even in the same league as my setup. I know I probably sound pridefull right now. But the fact that he was even comparing the 2 systems was insulting. That's the only reason I even mentioned it.

Seriously, I have no life.

There's no "like someone came in...", that's exactly what happened. They had no permission to touch anything and if someone screws with a system that's set a certain way, they need to know how long it took to set it that way. If someone had done this to mine, I would get in their face about it. A good "First of all, Who TF said you could use my system? If you don't know how to work my system, don't f&^% with it!" might get the message across. If theu cranked the snot out of it, play something with a lot of synth in it and listen for your tweeters to squawk. If they do, they need to get a bill for the repairs.

I'd be seriously pissed. Brothers in law or not, they would never be in my house without me there, again.

It really is sad when you can not even trust family members. Strangers are one thing, family is quite another. Revenge sounds good but just brings you down to their level, which is pretty low IMO.

I can sympathize with your feeling of violation. And, by posting this, you have given all of us something to think about.

I have two dedicated circuits for my HT. I will start switching them off and locking the fuse box when I go out of town and have people dog sit based on your experience.

Take solice in knowing that you may have saved many of us from the same frustration.

Happy Holidays and have a better new year.:)

Happy New Year!

Invite the out-laws over and whip out your SPL meter. Bring your system up to a good level with a bass heavy CD. Then go to their places and blow their systems up trying to bring 'em up to the same SPL's.

"Crank your volume to 8.5, then hit play." :D

Just kidding.

One of the things that I like about AH is that there really isn't any trash talking about other people's systems, and some of these guys (you included) have nice systems. All I ever hear is people encouraging the enjoyment of A/V gear. Your out-laws just don't know any better.

I was stuck in Cincinnati for a night after having my flight out of RI delayed for a day.
All the electronics got unplugged before I left.
I can't imagine anybody I know trying to turn my system on.
Of course you're right to be pissed.

That sucks. You do know the difference between in-laws and outlaws, don't you?

Outlaws are wanted. :D

Seriously, some people have no respect for other people or their things. They think the world exists for their pleasure only.

I feel your pain, man.

I would be really angry as well.

That's why my HT Room is always LOCKED when I'm not home, and I'm the only one with the key.:D

It Could Be Worse

Whew, for a minute I thought this thread was going to be about getting a colonoscopy.

Whether it's your A/V, HT or anything in your home... It should have been left alone. You trusted your sister to house sit, and that trust was violated.

She should NOT have allowed any of that to go on. It's about rules of respect. That they used your stuff, could've even damaged it, then made fun of it just adds fuel to the fire of insult, IMO.

It's your home, why didn't they just sleep in your bed, wear your underware, and fart on your sofa? Same difference, just a lack of respect of you and your belongings.

Perhaps a different house sitter may be in order.

Well, I did a quick search in my area and it seems the Indian's have a "lock" on this line of work!!! And, I can't tell from their names who is a sir and who is a madam. I guess I better start searching harder if I am going to find one before my first check up!
