Am I the only one who thinks that the Oppo BD Universal player doesn't look very impressive aesthetically?:D

I mean doesn't it look like a $200 player?:D

No, it looks like a $400 player - the 983 :D

They are trying to flesh out their lineup, so if they put it at $400, then it will definitely steal sales from the 983. $100 more than the 983 though puts it pretty far from it even if you are getting a lot more.

I NEED the analog outputs. So I'll be shelling out the cash whatever it's priced at. I'm a sucker for the beautiful sounds of sacd. It's nice to know that I haven't heard any complaints about the reliability of the Oppo players. They seem to be solid machines. That's why I'll be hooking one up.

I don't care if it looks like a ham sandwich so long as it acts like a $5,800 player. :)

Seriously, I have no life.
....
i'm not THAT excited to see "DTS-HD" on my receiver display
Unless your receiver handles basic DTS of some kind, you may need to be. A good % of BD are only DTS HD

I like it. The case looks like the Marantz brushed aluminum. But I hope the price is closer to $399. I use my PS3 for everything and it's tough to replace it.

They already said it will be no less than $499 at this point, so my hope of it being around $400 is shot too. They could surprise us, but I doubt it. Perhaps they will have another model that doesn't have the other stuff (SACD, DVD-A, etc...) that will cost less.

Does anyone know who's plattform they use? The reason I am asking is that years ago I purchased the Camelott Round Table which used a Panasonic plattform.

That's what I'm hoping, but they don't have much time before I go buy the Panny. I don't want any of that. Just Anchor Bay upscalling for my DVDs, profile 2.0, 7.1 Analog outs, and decent load times.

Is it too hard to make all that for $399? They would be wise to offer different versions.

I agree. I don't care for DVD-A or SACD. None of my fav musical bands have much of an offering in high res audio. Plus, the new Blu-ray Cd will probably be the deth nell for SACD and DVD-A - or whatever's left of it, unfortunately. I just want a quiet, reliable, decent quality player that plays my cds well, does blu-ray, and upscales DVDs well. I'll wait for it to drop the price a bit. Right now, I'm happy with my PS3, even though the fan is annoying. I just turn up my Energys even louder.

You're a Panasonic bd35 or bd55 candidate then depending on whether you want the multi-channel, 55, outputs or not, 35.

I'm getting one for sure!

Analog outputs is a must so I can keep my NAD receiver (used as a pre/pro), plus I have a few SACD a really like. So this guy fits perfectly for me!

I'll have a Pioneer Elite DV-48AV for sale soon I hope! :D

Some months back I asked that same question and the answer was no. Furthermore there was no way to successfully convert HDMI to component. Even HDMI to DVI wouldn't work because of the lack of HDCP compliance on my TV at the time. However from what I understand your TV is already doing what you want the player to do, probably better than most players can.
I didn't see your post. The Toshiba HD DVD players will upconverted non-CSS protected SD DVD's over component. Look for a device called a HDFury to convert DVI/HDMI to component. It's not foolproof, but many have reported that it works.

Mike, you won't see DTS-HD pop up on your receiver if you use the analog outs :D
yes, ... im currently using a PS3 as a BD player - so the only thing i see on my receiver is Multi Channel PCM. (i never see the DTS-HD flag) and i'm not excited to spend money just to see that flag on my receiver :)

You can see DTS-HD on your player for $99 or less in the form of a used/refurb'd Samsung BD-P1400 or for a little bit more one of the Funai clones.

This player is for people who either want a universal (sans HD DVD) player, want killer upscaling (not to be dismissed) or NEED multichannel analog outputs. For the multichannel crowd that want internal DTS-HD MA decoding, the only other choices are much pricier Denon, Pioneer, Marantz and Cambridge Audio systems or the Panny DMP-BD55. (The Samsung BD-P25xx does not internally decode DTS-HD MA)

I am definitely no Oppo or Blu-Ray cheerleader, but I don't think the price is out of line at all.

Here's its 7.1 multichannel analog output competition:

Oppo player -- SACD/DVD-A? playback, nonpareil SD DVD playback
Panny DMP-BD 55 -- fast loading (for a standalone), decent SD DVD performance, relatively bug free (for a standalone) operation, DIVX playback
Samsung BD-P25xx -- NO DTS-HD HR/MA internal decoding, EXCELLENT upscaling via Reon, Netflix bitstreaming, questionable DACs
Sony BDP-S550 -- DTS-HD MA decoding after firmware update?, questionable SD DVD performance
Denon/Marantz -- profile 1.1 only, $2k, EXCELLENT upscaling via Realta, still doesn't internally decode DD+ (A $99 Toshiba HD-A2 could do this last year!)
Denon -- $4k, SACD/DVD-A, EXCELLENT upscaling
Pioneer -- profile 1.1 only, $800, reportedly good upscaling
Yamaha -- profile 1.1 only, $1000
Onkyo -- profile 1.1 only, no DTS-HD MA decoding?, $800
Panny DMP-BD10AK -- profile 1.0, sloooooooow, HORRIBLE SD DVD upscaling, plays DVD-A's, no DTS-HD MA decoding, cheap...about $100 used on e-bay
i want to see it on my receiver though ... :)

my receiver can handle DTS-HD, my player doesn't ... it just sends as multi channel PCM.

on the other hand, i wonder if my Toshiba A35 can make my receiver flag DTS-HD (or some other HD flag) i actually forgot to look.

Hurry it up. I've got $300 cash back bonus waiting on my Discover card burning a shadow on my mind. With Ascend speakers there is Oppo or not exactly.

Seems like you are already where you want to be. :)
Actually, I don't believe that my television actually upscales SD content... It's a sony rear projection CRT. It supports both 480p and 1080i natively, so all
DVD content is displayed at 480p. I'm curious how a good scaler at 1080i would look.

Good point.

Well, after looking at the pics some more, the BDP-83 does look better than the other Oppo players; it looks a little bigger and has those silver insulation feet.:D

I just returned the Pioneer Elite DV-58AV.

I think I will just get this Oppo BDP-83, but only AFTER they put the DVD-Audio in it.:D

Yeah, you got my point that you don't need an Oppo, etc. to see DTS-HD on your receiver. A slow Sammy BD-P1.4k will take care of that for you. Yep, your HD-A35 will bitstream DTS-HD HR and DTS-HD MA provided you have the right source material. It's one of the six HD DVD players that can bitstream high res audio.

Just received an email about the early adopter program for the BD-83. In addition to the details of the program, they also included this:

We would also like to take this time to update you on the status of BDP-83 developments. The last two months have been very fruitful, as the player now supports BD-Live (Profile 2.0) and can internally decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats. DVD-Audio has yet to be implemented through firmware, but we are working diligently on this feature. A preliminary features and specifications list will be available on our web site on Tuesday March 3rd.
Price is $499 if you are chosen for the program, only 50 people will be chosen to participate initially.
