Is my room size sufficient

I am just about to set up a dedicated hometheatre in my basement. My sizes are 17 feet length 10 feet width and 9 feet height. Before putting up a lot of money in the venture I would like to know if my room size is ok. Normally I watch movies with my wife and chances of more than 4 persons are rare. Otherwise to increase the size of the room I will have to make some major chanages in the room which involves breaking a wall.
I have Mit HD1000 projector., Wharfdale satellite 80W speakers and Yamaha DSP. I might upgrade later to bigger speakers.

Thanks

Everybody's preference and capabilities are different. I've heard of people using smaller rooms, but I don't see any issues why you can't. I'd consider a 92"-96"dia. screen with seating back about 10.5" for starters. A small bookshelf/sub system would work well in that space. One that is recommended quite a bit: http://www.svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm If that's a little rich, we can find something else that'll hopefully fit your budget.

10 ft is pretty narrow. I'm not sure if you could even center a normal sized sofa & still have room to walk by. If you're starting with a celan slate, I'd go wider.

The room my system is in was 11'x16' before I knocked out a wall and opened it to the kitchen and I have a doorway in the right rear corner. I also have a three seat sofa on the back wall. If you don't need to walk around the seating, that size will be fine. Its proportions are pretty decent, in terms of bass response- definitely better than mine and mine doesn't sound bad at all.

2 rows of 2 can fit very nicely in 10x17. You have the additional benefit of a 9' ceiling - a luxury that a lot of us wish we had.

The trick is to size things properly from the sound system to the screen size, etc.
