Help needed on my HT & Receiver decision

Hello Everyone, I'm new to this forum and i have read a lot on this forum.

I currently have a Samsung 46 LN46A550 & Samsung Blu Ray DVD

I'm planning to buy a Mirage Nanosat® 5.1 (Crutchfield $799)
Receiver : debating on Onkyo TXS706 ($799 on Sale $579) or TXS606 ($499, on Sale $359)

The Comparison on Crutchfield shows that Except for THX not on TXs606 both seem to be same


Planning to put the speakers on stand/Floor, I dont want to put it on a wall. Also planning to do the wireless rear speakers ( using Rocket fish).

Any help or suggestions on my decisions would be greatly appreciated

Get the TX-SR606, you will not be using the extra power they TX-SR706 has for those speakers. Even the TX-SR606 has more than enough juice to destroy those speakers if you don't calibrate the max levels on the Onkyo. Be sure to refer to the manual of the TX-SR606 to make those settings, they may save your speakers.

THX post processing is nothing special IMO, and THX power standards far exceed the mechanical limits of the Nanosat speakers.

For $799.00 that Mirage system is a bit over priced IMO. And I don't think you'll be happy with it in the long run. I went to crutchfield and checked it out.

Can you up your budget to $999.99? The SVS SBS-01 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers with PB10-NSD subwoofer is a real system, and people are going nuts over the sound of the speakers. The sub is a proven performer, plus you get thirty days to try it out in your house.

Receiver choice instead of loudspeakers

I have sold and owned Mirage loudspeakers both large ( M7si )and small, and for a small to medium size roomthey will do a fine job for both movies and music , with the right sub. I would consider going to Audio Advisor (.com), and check out the buy they have on the Velodyne Mini Vee ( a sub that would work well with the Nano Sats, as well as a sizeable upgrade.

I have spent a lot of time shopping lately ( for a Blu Ray player for myself, but, more for completing my Dad's home theater. Right now, Best Buy ( of all places ) has a closeout on a Harman Kardon receiver that is selling for $399 that can't be beat for under a grand. The watt/ch spec is VERY misleading
and if you can get the high current rating, it'll blow away anything in its class AND sound better! Plus you get HK's proprietary Logic 7 surround mode which is trickle down technology from Harman's high end lines ( Lexicon, Proceed,, Mark Levinson ).

The bottom line is there are literally thousands of loudspeakers to choose from and all will sound different to everyone, and especially in different rooms. At least with Crutchfield, they have a stand up return policy ( as do many other retailers ). Most people will recommend what they own - or they wouldn't have bought them for their own. But do yourself a favor, and snatch up one of those H/K receivers before they are gone - I've owned and sold HK amplifiers along with about any brand you can name for almost 30 years = and dollar for dollar ( at retail ) they JUST SOUND BETTER ! A.) you can probably get whatever H/K model you mention online for cheaper than $399, but you didn't mention the model though.

B.) the TX-SR606 can be found for cheaper than $399 online as well, and benchtested better than a $1299 H/K AVR-630.

The Velo Mini Vee can't hold a feather to the sub I suggested. And it cost way more than its worth, I tried one too. And they cost $700.00!!! Rip off.

I own SVS, a PB13-Ultra Subwoofer that cost $1700.00 and is very well respected here as on AVS Forums, and others. One moderator here has 6 of these subs for two theater rooms. Make no mistake, the system I own cost well in excess of $8500.00 and I recommended the SVS system because its a great system, with real speakers.

If you really want that nanosat system, I would get it at wwstereo.com for $549 free shipping.

But with all the other packages there of better speakers for the same price or lower, I would get something else, like one of their Energy systems of C-500 towers x2, C-100 bookshelf surrounds x2, and center speaker for like $600. Then just get some low cost but good sub, like a Bic, Asub, Velodyne vx-10, etc. You could even get 4 C-100s for $260 shipped, then get a center and a sub. Those systems will completely BLOW AWAY nanosat for right around the same price or even lower.


EDIT: Oh sorry, I just noticed that the wwstereo.com price on the nanosats was for the 5 speakers only, no sub. I'm not sure what 5.1 package you're looking at, but wwstereo has 2, one for $599 and one for $800. But you're still waaaaay better off with the Energy or SVS systems. It looks like the c-c100 center is out of stock, but with the c-c50 all 5 speakers are only $560. Then just get a sub. Personally I would wait for a c-c100, but either way it is going to crush nanocrap. I haven't even heard nanocrap, but I can just guess at what it's going to sound like compared to real speakers. but it's your money.

I've owned Sherwood, RCA, Pioneer (standard and Elite), Denon, KLH (pile of crap this is, worst receiver evars!), Teac, Sony (standard and ES), Yamaha, Onkyo, Panasonic, Technics, JVC, Optimus, Magnavox, Kenwood, and Insignia receivers. Many of those brands I have owned more than one receiver of. I guess I sorta have free reign to recommend what ever the hell I want then don't I? This makes me a very dangerous person indeed.

I guess I need to get NAD, Marantz, Rotel, and Harman Kardon on my list. I'll work on doing that this year.

OP should get a KLH.

Onkyo's website has a little more information about the receivers than crutchfield. The two things the 706 has that the 606 does not is 1080P upscaling and a zone 2 option. The zone 2 options would be a delabreaker for me on the 606 as this is a feature I required in a receiver.

And +1 for the rocketfish wireless... I have not used it, but I have heard it and there it little if any loss in audio quality.
