I am in the market for a universal Player. Specifically for audio performance and NOT video. I want the best bang for my buck, and I see in recommended systems the OPPO player. But I also see Denon's 3930Ci Get really high reviews as well. What I want to know is what makes one better than the other, strickly in terms of audio. I see the DACs and they look to be comparable. 192/24 which leads me to my next question what do you sepcifically look for in a SACD/DVD-A player to determine if one is better than another they all seem to be 192/24. I know about THD but with some of the factions I see, is that the game changer? I was also looking into a marantz DV9600 and also cambridge audio and yamaha's equipment. But to my eye I cannot discern some of these $2000 players from Oppo's $200 player:confused:. I need someone to show me the light. Im willing to spend the money if its for audio performance, I really dont want to spend for the video piece of it Ive already commited to going 100% blu-ray with my video collection upscaling just doesn't do it for me.

Hi Julius and welcome to the forum.

My first question would be what type of connection do you plan on using (HDMI or analog)?

The players that are much more money tend to have separation of the analog power supply and digital section.

I just sold my Denon DVD-5910CI (retails $3800) and bought a used black DVD-1920 SACD/DVD-A for $90.

To me, the biggest difference is bragging rights.:D

The actual audio difference may not be as significant as some people think - if any at all.

And it may also depend on the rest of your system. Do you own reference quality speakers like B&W 800D or Revel Salon 2?

If not, just get a silver DVD-1920 for $80 or a black DVD-1920 for $90.:D

Well, guys, 2 bad news on this.

First, the dvd-1920 is not even available @ dakmart.

Second, the dvd-1920 is not dsd-direct (nor HDCD) since the owner's manual says nothing of Source Direct, which is required in the 2910/955/3910/3930/5910 for DSD-direct.

eCost has the dvd-955 Silver (same as 2910) for like $165, but the shipping is like $73, so I'll pass.

Now I have a little of "seller's remorse".

You guys realize that I first sold my DVD-3910 and got the DVD-5910CI, and then now just sold my 5910CI?

I'm going crazy.

Oh I thought you had ordered it already. I have a 1910 and I thought it had HDCD on the front of it.

I see you also got rid of your receiver. What happened to that?

You mean the AVP-8000DTS?:D

Yeah, I sold that one too.:D

My mind changes regularly.

So right now, I just have the DVD-3800BDCI and 3 PMA-2000IVR amps.

I was thinking of selling my 3 PMA2000IVRs as well and just get one AVR-5308CI, but for now I think I'll just keep my simple setup.:D

That's odd because this is what the specs say on the Denon website about the 1920.

Burr-Brown 24/192 Audio DACs (DSD/PCM Discrete) PCM-1738

Well, it may be DSD-Discrete. I may be wrong. However, the owner's manual mentions nothing of DSD or Source Direct.

In my mind, only the DVD-2900/3900/5900 series are DSD-Direct because all the manuals actually mention "DSD" and "Source Direct".

Simple is a relative term.:p:D
Oh, come on. My system is nothing but analog manual functions. There is nothing automatic/DSP/digital about the PMA-2000IVR. It's a simple plug and play system. Bare backbones. You just plug in the source and turn up the volume.:D

AcuDefGuy must be rubbing off on me. I bought an Oppo 980H yesterday.:cool:

I've been having issues playing some of our DVD+/-R's on the BluRay and HD DVD players and I have a few DVD-A & SACD's sitting around and I hate not being able to use them for demo's.

Anyone want an A2 with 19 HD DVD's? I don't have enough room for them all.

**hee**hee:D
Well, since I also have a few DVD-A & SACD, I just bought a Denon DVD-1920 on eBay for $70, which is about as much as I'm willing to pay these days.

Yeah, I have issues playing DVD+R/-R as well, that's why I still use my Sony 1080p 5-DVD changer. The Sony even plays DL DVDs. Even the 5910CI couldn't play any DVD+R or DL DVD. So I'll use the DVD-1920 for just CD/SACD/DVD-A/DVD-R Video. I'll use the Sony for DVD+R/DL. And I'll use the DVD-3800BDCI for just blu-ray. I'll keep the HD-XA1 for my HD DVDs.

Hopefully not since those 2 are truly CRAZY!
