I don't have a wife, but I do have a girlfriend. She has kinda caught on to my addiction, but, for the most part I downplay it with girls because when they figure out you look at speaker frequency plots you don't get laid.

Since I fix her car, keep her laptop humming along nicely, and a really good cook I have no problem when it comes to AV.

Not married, quite yet. That happens in May. As far as what the lady thinks about me and this hobby? She thinks I am ****ing insane to be frank.

Lets take a look at some of the reasons why:

  • I spent 3 days straight building a subwoofer while I was running a fever and it was in the 40-50s outside.
  • I tried to get her to ride home from TX to IA (800 miles about 12 hours) in the back of my civic so the sub would fit! I did manage to get the sub in the back and avoid execution...
  • The computer speakers I am building right now weigh more than her...
  • I have a pair of speakers that I tell her are superb for their price point, but I refuse to listen to music on them (they aren't that good :))
  • I have piles of tools, books, papers, drivers and electronics just sitting about our apartment waiting to be used.
  • The second bedroom doubles as a curing chamber for painted projects.
  • I never shut up about audio :).
  • I cook very well, so she still wants to marry me ;)

I'm just glad I can write this addiction off as at least semi positive and go from there :D.

Mine is pretty cool with it. I don't spend tons and pay for with "my toy money". I get funny looks sometime, like when I said I'm driving to Detroit to pick some speakers {I live in Southeast Ohio}, but I got a good deal on them. She was a bit shock {and them awed ;) } with the SVS Ultra sitting in the living room when she came home from a trip, but I discussed the purchase with her, I might have missed judge the size a tad  . But thankfully she likes "loud", blowin' up stuff, adventure movies, and game playing.

At first she was kind of stand off-ish about it, kinda "whatever makes you happy" attitude. Then she went to a friend of her's house where her fiance just got a custom HT installed in his basement, then she uttered the words that every one of us long to hear..."Can we have one of those, I don't really care how much it costs, I just want one like that." I knew I married her for a reason.

...about your AV addiction?
I don't have a problem.
I can quit anytime I want. :D

She likes decent sounding music and movies. I also thinks she kinda grooves on normal people being impressed but if I never uttered the word speaker again she would be a happy woman. So she likes the gear but could do without the obsession.

Test tones and speaker modifications on the dinning room table are not big in her books either.

Mine hates me bringing anything else into the house that has to do with audio. Hell the last piece I brought in I told her it was to make the cable box faster. She bought it.....:D

My wife doesnt really mind cos she feels i use money well and my speakers are not overwhelming in size. Just beautiful yellow kevlar wharfedale Evo10s.

I dont like techno music, so its hardly listened to at home but she sometimes wants to play it, and wait for the sub to kick in from sleep mode. Sweet.

She love roots reggae on the system. :) Good for me.

Unfortunately she does not like action movies and explosion packed movies so sometimes she asks me to turn it down. But if its a movie she likes then its all up.

I'm going to build my new speakers and that i dont know what she will say because it will mean time for her will be reduced.
But i'm sure that after I have finished she will say that I'm glad you did it. It looks good. She always does with my DIY stuff.:p

My wife enjoys good music and movies, and appreciates the way quality equipment makes them look and sound better. She's the one who bought my PS3 as a present, and she certainly helps feed the addiction by pointing out new movies to buy!!

As long as I have the money to spend on the toys she doesn't bother me.

My wife loves having the system. She comes shopping with me to check out gear and reprograms the Harmony remote after every upgrade. She uses the system as much or more than I do, so she can see the improvement as the system evolves. She has drawn the line on speakers, though. If it were up to me, I'd have about 10 different sets of speakers to use depending on my mood but she doesn't think that makes much sense.

Wifey loves our system(s). But sacrifices were made. I sold my Harley to pay for the two systems. The one in the bedroom is key. Not only did I get a 106" screen in the living room, but she got a 92" screen in the bedroom. No more fighting over the TV.
(Oh, and we put in quartz counter tops in the kitchen. That may have helped)

My wife has been pleasently surprised by it all. She was fairly uninterested until she started actually listening to the system and got to experience watching movies at home on a good HT.

She laughs about my membership here. She told her friend who was over the other day, "Some women seem to worry about their men talking in chat rooms to other women... I gotta worry with him running off with AmplifierGuy or whoever!"

I do make a big deal each time I get a new title or chicklet. A couple of days ago, I became a general. I called her up and said she had to call me back because she had people in her office. I said, "It can't wait... I have really great news!!!!!" She got all excited and I told her, "I just became an Audioholic General and got another chicklet!"

She just hung up.

That's the way to do it. I don't mind spending money when it benefits everyone in the family. It's gotta be hard to sell your bike though. My wife and daughter are after me to get rid of mine.

Now that's impressive! Nancy like listening to music and having the occasional movie night, but she could care less about "the stuff." I pulled out my old Adcom 555II last night and I was just beaming at it and was trying to explain to her how cool looking it was and she just stared at me with a blank look on her face. She doesn't get it.

That just made me laugh out loud, literally - I do the same exact thing with my wife. :D She knows better now, when I say, 'eh, this is the last thing I need', rolls her eyes, and continues with what she was doing. She knows it never ends...
