Hi All!

I have recently joined this forum and been quite impressed by the quality of information and support extended by the members.

I intend to by a new home theatre system and my budget is US$3K to 3500. Saw a package from Polk Audio - RTi A7s for the front, A6 for the center, A3s for the rear and DSW400 subwoofer. The price is around US$1700. It was connected to Yamaha V3800 receiver and was sounding a bit boomy. I listened to a speaker set connected to Denon 3808 and I liked it more than Yamaha.

Would like to know from you all regarding the quality of Polk Audio, their value and performance. Also, will it pair well with denon?

Please advice.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

First, the Polks should pair just fine with that Denon. I am one of the people that believe that you don't need to pair particular brands of electronics with particular brands of speakers. The Denon (and most modern receivers) has an auto set-up routine that will do some equalization for you, and because those set-up algorithms differ between some companies, the end result is that the systems will sound a bit different with the different brands - but that is more a function of your room (IMO) than the brand names.

My last experience with listening to Polks was over ten years ago, so I'm in no position to comment on those models. Several people here have recommended other brands of subs above Polk, but I know people who are happy with their Polk subs. The boominess could have been a function of the set-up and not some inherent aspect of the system to which you were listening.

I have owned and liked polk for years, Until I heard some other brands of speakers. For your budget I would recommend checking into some other brands as well. There are a grip of great speakers out there that would be in your price range. I would check out the AV123 deals, as well as the Audioholics store. SVS has some great sets and so does PSB...just some thoughts.I am not bashing Polk, but they have moved much further down my list as some great speakers have made their way to the marketplace recently..

Polk is a no.

Yamaha is a yes.

Denon gets a bigger yes from me.

Speakers. It depends on what is available to you to audition. You will be able to get better performance in your pricerange by getting a higher quality brand bookshelf speaker from any of the following brands. Just a few off the top of my head.
B&W
Monitor Audio
Totem
MB Quart
Dynaudio
PSB
NHT
Von Schweikert
Pinnacle

I'm not saying you didn't hear a difference. But I am going to say you didn't hear a difference from the amp section from those receivers. What might have made the difference in sound was the way the receiver was set-up.

Both Yamaha, and Denon make fine receivers.

I would not recommend the Polk Audio subwoofer.

If you state your room size, and budget for the subwoofer I can help direct you to other options.

One more question though. On that two setups with the different receivers, were they in the same room and same speakers? Or, in showrooms, different speakers and room?
