DEF TECH guy......when you say the 18hz is not tolerance you mean it doesn't stay at a constant 18hz?
also what other definitive sub would you recommend i get? i want one that goes real low. my price range is $600 to $800.

No, "Tolerance" is the +/-3dB, +/-6dB, or +/-10dB that goes along with the frequency response.

You want the anechoic chamber frequency response +/-3dB.

For example, the anechoic frequency response of the SuperCube I is 20 Hz - 150 Hz +/-3dB.

Def Tech says the FR of the SC-I is 13 Hz - 200 Hz, but it is the OVERALL FR. The actual response is 20 Hz - 150 Hz +/-3dB.

My dealer could get me 30% off Def Techs, so the SC-I would be $840 + tax.

See if your dealer could do that.

Here is one online pricing I just saw:

Well i pushed the woofer in and out and it moved freely with no noises.
yes all my setting are correct, i use audyssey, it calibrates my system for me. and before anyone says anything about audyssey, i've been using it for 8 months now and its been fine. i dont have an spl meter but audyssey does that for you anyway. again, before anyone comments about that, like i said its been sounding fine for 8 months, its not that.
its definitely my sub.....i put on a movie today and it was boomy like crazy, it sounded nasty. when i wached casino rayale i always had a little boom yea, my room is square and i dont have any treatments, but this was bad! it never sounded like this before. infact audyssey fixed the boom i was having with that movie and others.
the scene near the end when the building is crumbling down, that was the the worst. it didn't sound like a crumbling building, that whole scene was boomy and distorted. never sounded like that before.
Yeah, I hate to say it, but I would get it fixed or get a new sub. Have you emailed Chet yet?

Yea i did and he said send it in to best buy service center to have them look at it. im doing that tommorow, hopefully they give a new one.
that SC1 only goes 9hz deeper than my 1000, i want something that gets to 10hz flat or even lower. are supercubes down firing sub's, or forward? and is there any differences between the two? i like my 1000's downfiring woofer. thanks for all your help.

You won't find any Subs that do 10Hz @ -3dB for $800.

Even the Trinity goes to only 16 Hz @ -3dB.

The only commercial sub I know of that has been measured down to 10Hz is the Epik Conquest:

http://www.epiksubwoofers.com/ConquestOverview.html

But you don't need to go down that low.

That is why most people here recommend buying subs from SVS or AV123 or HSU, etc. If you want bang-for-your-buck, you need to get one of these subs, especially SVS.

I have my BP8Bs back out in the stereo room again. This time, I have managed to get them to sound fantastic! The key was to pull them far enough away from the walls. I have resisted this before because it reduces the distance between the speakers, which I (mistakenly, as it turns out) thought of as a high priority. They are now 2.5ft from the side walls (making them only 6ft apart) and 6ft from the wall behind them.
In this position, the bass is extended and powerful, but also clean and tight without the slightest trace of muddiness or boominess. Counterintuitively, there is no decrease in the immense soundstage, and imaging is even more precise than before. I no longer need to consider any other speakers, as there are no desireable characteristics that other speakers have and the Def Techs lack. They are virtually perfect!

Glad to see that you finally followed the recomended setup for di-poles... Do you think that improoper setup could have influenced alot of the other speakers that you have made disparaging comments about:)

Are you talking about the prosub800? the sub1000 sounds amazing in my room(10x12) its just that now something went wrong with the bass output. i going to send it in to see if anything is wrong
and how can something smaller sounds better than a 10"? maby in your room?
I guess we are talking about different subwoofers. The line you speak of replaced those I mentioned.

Bigger doesn't always mean better though.;)

I suppose that that is possible (with regard to comments about bass.) Certainly, I have never had any speakers such an extreme distance out into the room before.

Yup, speaker placement is so important, especially for bipolar speakers.

The difference can be like night-and-day sometimes.

Yeah, the most important thing about ANY speaker system is how it actually sounds to the OWNER, regardless of price, specs, or brand. If your speakers sound perfect to YOU, then they are perfect speakers for YOU.

Now stop all the searching. Sit back, relax, and just enjoy the music.:D

I have this Dilemma...

I've never had a good home theatre setup before, but I'm trying to jump on the bandwagon without falling flat on my face.

I am trying to decide between a coworker's used (but "mint") Definitive Technology system and a brand new Klipsch system from CircuitCity.

The Definitive Technology system includes BP10B mains, BP2X surrounds, a CLR2002 center, and a 500W 12" subwoofer (Def Tech... just not sure on the model)... alltogether for $1250.00.

The CircuitCity Klipsch deal includes F3 mains, S1 surrounds, a C2 center, and a 650W 12" sub (sub12)... alltogether for $1799.99.

Perhaps neither of these are the BEST deals, but if price isn't really the concern, which is the "better" path.

I do not listen to music. It would be purely for movie watching in a rectangular carpeted room (see ascii drawing below). Any advice (including options I have not considered) will be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Unfortunately, I cannot make a fair judgement on that. I heard the Def Techs in my coworker's home, so he obviously had the setup for it as opposed to the Klipsch setup at Circuit City. For power, either a Denon AVR-2807 or Yamaha RXV-1600.

Speakers are sooo subjective its tuff. These two speakers series are apples and oranges in their design philosophy.
Another thought

Personally, I cannot stand the sound of Klipsch. Some people do like them, though. As with anything, you really must listen before buying.

If you have to decide between the 2, then its definitely a no brainer-get the Def techs. Its a better value for the money. I just can't stand horn speakers.

Thanks for all replys. I will look at the link for AV123, but to be honest, I've never heard of those speakers. Anyway, I just wanted to get a sense of whether or not this should be a "tough" decision... it sounds like I may be justified in dilemma-nating (is that a word?).

Afterall, we are talking about 4+ year old speakers for $1250 vs brand new speakers (with equivalent or slightly better "paper" specs) for $1799. That said, I have read many forums debating Klipsch vs Definitive and my impressions are "definitively" leaning toward Def Tech... I just don't see anything comparing older generation Def Tech to newer generation Klipsch (which makes sense)... hmm...
