I saw a commercial for it; it looks like a souped up Sherlock Holmes. But I'm a big fan of Sherlock Holmes. Anyone know anything about this show?

I saw the commercial too. Seems like it has been done before...basically he is a mind reader. And then there's the name...sounds goofy.

That was my take, too. Sherlock Holmes would take one look at someone and make some rather outrageous conclusions about them. The Mentalist guy sounds like an updated version of that.

None of the things they showed him making observations on seemed too difficult for the average person to detect. I used to read a lot of Sherlock Holmes and I enjoyed the way in which the cases were solved. I'm not sold on this one, as it didn't seem to indidcate if he was simply using deduction or something in addition to that.

I caught the first five minutes, but at the first commercial break...the pooch decided that it was time to walk. I didn't get back until five minutes after the show had ended.

I just started watching Psych a couple of weeks ago when I rented the first two seasons from Netflix. I thoroughly enjoy that show, but it has a lot of humor. I'll have to check out the Mentalist online if CBS puts on it their site.

That is what I was going to post that it might be like on a serious note.
I watched Psych but after a while, maybe 2nd season, lost interest as it got kind of silly for me.

Did you watch New Amsterdam? He was kind of like it, but then, he lived in NYC for 400 years and saw everything

CBS replayed The Mentalist last night, and I watched it. Not too bad. It has potential, to be either a good series or be one of those series that spirals into oblivion within a month or two. They seemed to put a lot of eggs into one particular plot line basket, and if that story line doesn't get worked out fairly soon, I think that the series will just kinda languish. JMO.

I saw the commercial for it where he is like reading off all these things about some girl and then she is like "ooohhh...how did you know that?!?!?!" and he says something like "I'm just paying attention." I can see some overpayed, overweight, executive sitting in a metting going "oh yeah... the girls will think that is dreamy.... that will get us the female population..... call some tampon companies for the advertising slots!"

She is like 60.

This is how they come up with ideas:

"How about Adam Sandler is a detective, and falls in love with his grandma.. or something?"

I watched this show at my brother's house.

Very basic plot:
This guy used to be a "professional psychic" even though he is not really psychic. A catastrophic event (I won't spoil) causes him to stop being a fraud psychic and he is now an advisor for a California investigation unit (not an actual cop).

He is very intuitive and can pick things up faster and in more detail than your average Joe. He also successfully hypnotizes someone they are questioning (which is illegal), so he definitely knows what makes people tick.

I like the show for several reasons:

• This takes place mostly in Central and Northern California, so it's close to me
• The main character is quite sarcastic and has a touch of arrogance because he is always right. It is interesting to see how that type of attitude plays out among the other characters.
• It is a crime investigation show, but they use unconventional means to solve these crimes. (a non-cop, fraud psychic who has no trouble bending/breaking laws to catch people)

The commercials may looks stupid, but I'd give it at least 1 episode. I have liked the two that I have seen so far. There are also some interesting plot developments that are worth me checking out future episodes to see how they turn out.
