I know this is off topic but seeing as how there is a convergence of knowledgeable computer types participating in this thread I'm going to take this opportunity to ask if there is a computer site/forum around that is like AH in the respect that you can go there knowing next to nothing and come away with a working vocabulary for starters.

I could benefit from a forum like that :D

I don't know if it's quite what you want, but you might check out the forum over at macrumors.com if you have questions about Mac gear. My brother is a mod over there, and he really knows his stuff. He took a few months off, but I think that he's getting back into it.

XP till they pry it from my cold dead fingers. :D
Hey, man - if you have questions, you can always just ask them here. Like you said, there are a number of people here that are pretty knowledgeable about computers. If you want to hack the registry, I'm not your guy - but if you need to get rid of a virus that keeps sending you to an Italian porn site, I can help. Well, I can help you seek professional help. After all, what guy would want to get rid of that? :D

forums.anandtech.com

This is a good site for basic pc knowledge and has good info on building your own PC and what hardware to get.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/

Once you build your first PC and want to get into overclocking or modding this website has it all. It has all the info about how Intel and AMD cpu's work and what bios settings you can do in each system.

anandtech would probably be my suggestion for what you're looking for as well.

Much appreciated. Trying to give out rep points has resulted in that 'too much in 24 hours' messege for the last 72 hours. :) So keep a close eye on your User CP. ;)

I'm not a fan of tomshardware, at one time many considered them biased (against AMD I think) but other than that I've not found their methods and results in reviewing very substatial/reliable.

Yeah he changes his bias around all the time. At one point he has pro Intel during the K8/P4 days when it was just absolutely clear that AMD had the speed crown. Nowadays since C2D is the undisputable champion he has switched his bias towards ATI. For credible benchmarks anandtech is a lot better.

Really? It's that bad? Well I guess my not paying attention to them has left me behind the times with only a memory of the pro Intel bias.

Ya know, I gave up a long time ago trying to keep up with the changes in computers, they happen even more frequently than all this HT and audio CR@P. Drives me knuts.....:eek:

I am certainly glad I was delayed to make a move on upgrading my Laptop, which will get me into Vista now that you guys are suggesting that it is much more stable since its inception. And this isn't the only place I have gotten that feeling from....

I know its not a full blown computer site, more dedicated towards Laptops but I have found more then enough info at http://forum.notebookreview.com/ which helped guide me to what I wanted in the end... or didn't want...:)

I find notebookreview isn't a bad laptop resource myself. I've participated there a bit recently.

Don't think Vista is about the future, more like "how do we make the most annoying operating system ever" and how do we make it perform as slowly as possible. How Vista can be progress in this world is beyond me...... I cannot think of one single function in Vista that's better than what you'll get with sth like Windows Server 2003.
Well, shouldn't really compare Desktop and Server OS, but I'm using a server OS for the desktop......

I liked windows all the time and I have been running many beta's and release candidates, mainly their server OS's, but now....
Microsoft screwed up with Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Tried Vista and Windows Server 2008 many times, always ending up with deinstalling, and going back to Windows Server 2003... or a Linux distro

Vista is full of "Idiot Features", like it won't let you install a different driver for a given printer than the one that vista think is the right one, so if a printer driver won't work, there's nothing you can do. If a legacy driver works with a given printer, Vista won't let you install it...... Absolutely ridiculous.

I had problems with dhcp on a vista machine and dhcprequest's timing out, due to Norton antivirus probably messing up the tcp/ip stack..... the nice thing about Vista is that it hides absolutely all messages, so the only thing you get is "Operation did not work", and if you try to run a troubleshooting Wizard, you get the message: "Could not find out what was wrong" really helpful thing to make the OS so smart that there's no way to find out what's wrong..... Yes pleaze let us hide all useful messages, because nobody will understand them....

Mr Ballmer, you have to do something about this, but I guess he doesn't read these threads anyways.....

And Norton is following up this dinosaur way of making software, they make it so incredibly huge that you will never get it out of the machine, probably almost impossible to deinstall. So now they're creating a new toolset, just to get rid of the software. Where's the world going when the software get so complicated that you need to develop new toolset's just to get rid of the applications.

My 7 year old outdated legacy desktop PC with Ubuntu 8.04 and scarce memory resources is way faster than a brand new HP laptop with Vista and 2GB memory

And good sites, perhaps I'm very old fashioned, but still enjoying paper magazines, anyone heard about that :)
