Hello,

I'm a college student who has found myself in possession of two old Pioneer HPM-40 loudspeakers (8 ohms, rated at 40 W, max at 80 W) that are in good working condition and a proton D940 receiver (4-16 ohms, a lot of power? not sure) that would probably need between 100-200 dollars to work well. My question: is this setup compatible? should i pony up the money for repairs on the old receiver (a friend of a mine told me it may be worth it) or is there something comparably expensive that would power my speakers just as well or better? i would appreciate any advice; i'm just trying to get some good jazz listened to without eviscerating my already-thin wallet.

Thanks

Cool!

I *think* those speakers were the first to use composite materials in the tweeters.

That receiver is 40watt per channel, so it would work perfectly.

You'd probably have a better, more reliable, amplifier if you bought a new one .... but the vintage with vintage is pretty cool. If you can get it fixed without breaking the bank, I'd do that. If it is going to cost a bunch to get it fixed, then just buy a new amplifier.

You can also try ebay or audiogon to find a vintage amp/rcvr like an old Marantz that has a sweet sound that would be a good match for jazz listening. My dad has an old 25wpc Marantz that has a sound I envy somtimes.

Your in college...go to the local pawn shops, thrift stores, salvation army & yard sales and look for a cheap vintage solution. I would not try to fix the Proton for that kind of money. I've found nice vintage stuff for $20-$30. I have a Pioneer SX-838 receiver that cost me $30 and it works beautifully.

Just takes patience...:)
