From my understanding, the proper power-on sequence is: TV->AVR->Source (cable box).

I had the same problem when I initially connected my A2 to my Monoprice HDMI switch. The manual said you had to turn things on in a certain order for the switch to "recognize" the component - I believe it was that the component had to be turned on after the switch, then after that it was OK for a while. After a few weeks, I had drop outs on picture, but not audio. I disconnected and reconnected the A2 and fired them up in order again and the problem went away completely. The odd thing is, I never had that problem with my 980 or PS3.

It just seems weird that I can wiggle the HDMI cable and get it to work.

That leads me to believe it's not a handshake issue, but a connector issue. Either the cable or the connector on the cable box. Perhaps get a new cable box?

I will start wit the new cable once it gets here and then change the sat box if that doesnt work.

Wiggling fixing it would tend to make me believe it is the cable also. When it happened to me, I swapped cables but the same thing happened with the same device and not the others, so I knew it wasn't the cable.

Oh I see why you sent the PM now, Greg. Whenever I see handshake threads, my eyes glaze over, and I mosey along.

See if the sequence of turning things on might make a difference. If you turn the receiver on first when the problems happen, try to turn it on after the cable box.
Since this doesn't happen with the direct to TV connection, I just don't see this as a cable issue.
I think mtry is on the right track. When you wiggle, just how much are you wiggling?

As I said in the PM, Ive actually heard both ways for getting handshake to work better: either source first, or receiver first. crafts is explaining a good experiment to try, just in case.

Now, lets say the Sat has to be turned on last. And you find that out, and lets pretend it DOES work. Then yet another problem you might have occuring is, say for example, you switch sources to something else, ie bluray, but then an hour later you switch back to STB . . . welp, you gotta turn off the STB, and turn it back on for this handshake to work. Its happened to others.

What's interesting, at least when Im paying attn, it seems that most sat boxes work just fine, and that its cable boxes that often lack hdcp repeaters.

Let us know how it works out.

And the worst case scenario is running it direct to display. Yeah, its ONE more button on a remote to press, but hey. You have nothing to lose in AV quality, possibly something to gain, and possibly easier calibration of video per source input.

If that is the case, you might just have to make macros or turn off everything and use a one button macro to turn everything on for what you want to do. If using a Harmony or similar, this could be quite simple.

Yes, I do use a Harmony and I can change the sequence. This has not occured in the past two days so maybe it has corrected itself???

Like I said, with my A2, I got it working after a while and it was fine after that. You may be in the same boat, though it may still have to do with the order that things are turned on. I am going through a switch though, so that is a little different also.
