I just looked through the manual and it does not state in the usual place that you have to have componenet to see the GUI. I would think it will work through the HDMI.

OSD works via HDMI?

Thanks!
On the 1800 the GUI does work thru HDMI. But there is an annoying delay in both sound and picture before it does display the GUI. I'm guessing the receiver is changing it's resolution.

I'm not sure if the 3800 is the same, but I suspect it is.

Thanks man!

It is all set-up as of last night beside a final calibration and programming the remote. Once the family is up, I will finish it this morning and then wait for the storm to hit late this afternoon.
Congrats on your purchase Greg.

Batten down the hatches, get the pooches inside, pour a scotch or three, hit Pure Direct, and get ready for a new set of woofers. :)

Is there anyway to display the volume on the TV or a way to increase the size of the volume display on the AVR?

It's kind of funny, everyone here is at Home Depot getting generators, boards and nails and I am getting CL-3 wire so I can re-run my zone speakers.

Greg,

While I was going to get the owner's manual (to check on the volume display), I saw that there is a firmware update for the 3800. I mention it just in case you weren't aware of it. It only applies to certain serial numbers.

Here is the link to the PDF file that explains the update.

If the serial number is Y181437WY or larger , it is not necessary for you to execute this firmware update

Mine is a Y248938QS so it looks like I am ok.

When I first read your post I was thinking "oh crap I am going to have to diconnect all this mess and take it in". It is nice that I can just download onto a flash drive and pop it into the AVR.

Volume thru HDMI? I Don't think so.

The volme display does take some getting used to. While you can't see the numeric display from beyond 5 feet or so (at least I can't:eek:) you will get used to aligning the bars with the letters above as a reference.

I'm not trying to downplay the significance of the tiny numbers. It was afterall a stupid design flaw by Yamaha. But that and the OSD glitch are really my only complaints about my 1800.

Didn't mean to make you nervous! :)

I just read that some people were experiencing a loud pop at times with Blu-ray, and I know how you like to crank it up from time to time...

I can probably live with it but the wifey already complained about not being able to tell how loud the TV was because she can't SEE the volume.:D

Hee, hee. "Listen...do you smell something?" :)

I gotta say, I'm with your wife on this. I like to know where the volume is set because I try to limit myself on how loud I listen to things most of the time. My way of trying to not go gradually deaf, I suppose.

Not joking, how about a magnifier (something like this)? You could put it in front of the volume display.

Not attractive, but perhaps effective.

Just in case the storm is not too severe (hopefully the case) and you're more in a swinging music mood:

I dont think that would work for us.

Did they address this issues with the 3900? Maybe I will just get it if they did.
