Front - JBL L36 (oldies but goodies)
Sides - Bose 301 (oldy and pretty good)
Rear - Monster THX 100 - NEW!!!
So, my problem is... seating is close to back wall... if I place rears at 6' is sound dispersion going to be satisfactory/too close... Can or should they be positioned behind sofa?
Also, since they will be close to listener position should my 301's be positioned a little forward of listener. (given that they are Bose technology this may not be as undesirable as conventional speaker...?)
Okay, about Bose 301s; I used to be a Bose bigot; actuall ystill have a pair of Bose 301,101s and two wave radios. Most poeple will say Bose ins't good and I have found there are bterr... but to use whatyou have....
One of my rooms is a media room which I converted from a medium size bedroom. I have tried various ways, but the best sound came from putting the rear surrounda at each side ear height sitting. and front surrounds 1/3 of the way from the from. At one time I also had speakers on shelves about back sitting area, but that didn't work out well from a sound perspective.
Two things to remember (1) most if you sound should be from your fronts and center; surrounds are not the main sound , just fro presence and (2) speaker palcement can be compenstated for a whole lot by varying speaker distance and speaker level parameters.
I ended up palcing very good fronts (Def Tech BP2006 towers) and center (Def Tech BP Procenter100) and faily good sub ( Klipsch ) and then using inexpensive speakers fro the surround sound ( Sony BP3000s only $99/pair shipped). This is not my main room and is used mainly for Wii, Xbox360, PS2, PS3.
If you have a microphone automatic equalization ,it is a very good place to start. The get an SPL meter ( Radio Shack). And also ajust to your own listening preferences.
