Subs in the back of the room

I'm thinking of augmenting my Def Tech 7002 with some additonal subs. The issue is, I have no room on my front wall (some of you may remember my setup and will understand my dilemma)

I was thinking of having dual subs in back by the surrounds. I was thinking something like the Emotiva dual sub setup. My question is, what kind of performance can I expect? Will having them on either side of the couch in back of the room totally ruin any ability to have accurate sound?

I don't think the placement of the sub is as important as other speakers; back of the room should work well.

A question, have you definitely selected Emotiva and definitely decided on dual subs. Is it a size consideration ? The SVS is still my favorite sub line and if the have the space a SVS PB13-Ultra would be awesome

Yeah, I don't think the location of the subs are critical either. I was thinking that in the future, I may just put my Trinity sub between the surround L + R speakers on the back wall.

I also think the back wall is fine. You'll want to get good placement on those subs, though, just like you would if you were placing them on any other wall.

I considered putting my B&W sub on the back wall. What stopped me? Running the audio cable. Just something to think about, but you aren't as lazy as me in regards to modifying your home (case in point - your painting stories). Hsu is now selling subs with built-in wireless, but you can always get separate wireless systems.

How about twin PC13-Ultras? I think that the symmetry would enhance the feng shui of the room.

Thanks guys. I'm not sold on anything yet, though I just liked the look of that Emotiva setup and thought how nice it would be to have another cool component in my cabinet. Really, it was nothing more than that.

I'm concerned about placement, I just don't have a lot of options. The couch is against the wall and I have a door about 4 feet or so to one side and an archway to a hallway about the same distance from the couch on the other. If I do get subs, they can really only go in one spot - directly next to the couch on either side. I was thinking that room correction thing on the Emotiva could actually serve a purpose in helping the sound integrate better since my placement was so limited.

Either way, I gotta get the wife behind it first. I tried to talk her into that new Elite bd player, but she about lost her tree when i told her it was $2k. I figured I start there, thinking that when I come back with $800 for the other Elite player, it wouldn't sound so bad. The reality is, I'll end up with a Sony 350, but I think blu-ray will be key in getting me my subs. She's starting to like this stuff more and more, but I gotta foster her growth very gently.

The smoker is 300 pounds. If it ever ends up in the pool, it'll be because Nancy got pissed at me and got the neighbor's angry wife to help her roll it in... which would likely happen if the room shakes and one of her favorite art glass pieces takes a tumble in the cabinet that was so strategically placed a mere 5 feet from the one tower.

I don't know/remember what your setup is like...but I was playing around with the idea of putting subwoofers in different locations in my room too. One of the other members on here, Jostenmeat, provided this link to some useful info.

If you can fit one in front of the room and the other in the back I think you will get the best results according to this.

I chose dual MFWs but still haven't received them yet! DANG it.

Yes sir, twin Ultras and you will think T-REX is walking by your pool ! I think you need to work on a good presentation meal with the Raspberry Chipolte sauce before you make your sub "business proposal".

That's an interesting suggestion, Mazer. You got me thinking, so I'm going to throw this out there. Chris, have you run through test tones in your room and measured the SPL as a function of frequency at your listening positions? That response would help you know where to focus your attention in terms of calibration or new gear. Just a thought. Sorry if you've already talked about that in another thread - I can't remember right now.

Yeah... pretty much. She doesn't work, their 3 yr old is in "school" 3 days a week, but she's constantly overwhelmed and soooooooo tired.

She's got it reeeeeaaaaalllllly rough.

You can sorda see from the pics below that I'm dealing with a pretty crappy room layout. On the TV side, just to the right of right tower, the room opens up to our kitchen and breakfast area. On the back wall, to the left of the left surround, there's a large archway to the back hallway. Really the only place I can see them going is where the surrounds are. The little tables they're on now are just temporary. We're gettng all new furniture for the room so I could easily incorporate room back by the surrounds somewhere.

And notice the all the glassware. I'd be afraid to put a sub between the left tower and the cabinet... not that the wife would let me put a big black box there anyway.

No, my neighbor's wife is just one of those gals who's forgotten how good she'd really got it. She watches more TV than any of us... believe me!

I never even thought about that. I'm assuming it would be more of a really tight hard hitting punch as opposed to a booooom... correct? I like that much better anyway.

Two reasons I haven't: 1) I'm not really sure how to do that effectively, but more importantly 2) I just sorda figured with the way the room is setup, I really didn't have a lot of options.

You know, Gene lives about 20 minutes or so from me. I need to bribe him with some BBQ or a night out for sushi and get him to come over.
