Hi,

Well I've joined the GIK club. I recently ordered four GIK tri-traps and six Ready Acoustic bags. I'm going to buy 4 more 244 panels and a set of 242's.

At the moment there is a less 10% discount (on the tri-traps and elite pillars) on your order now at AV123 and apparently it's lasting until the end of the month so I'm going to use that to help with the shipping costs. Shipping is just a tad expensive to South Africa, Cape Town. :D

At the moment I'm busy renovating and it's hectic right now. I'm hoping that things will be finished in the next month or two so I can only get impressions from those that own GIK traps or other acoustic treatment from GIK.

I can't wait until I get my traps. Those of you that own the tri-traps, please offer your thoughts and impressions, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks.

Regards,

Gik

I'm pretty happy with my GIK Tri-Traps and Panels (see pics in my sig link). I have them on every wall surface including the ceiling and the room is sounding very good. I considered going with an engineered room where all of the panels are integrated into the wall/ceiling surfaces and essentially hidden, but that would have been 10X the cost and decided to go this way.

Glen and Brian were a big help and gave good feedback regarding panel placement. Build quality is good and price is very reasonable. Shipping to South Africa must be nearly equal to the product price:eek:.

Thank you for your comments. I did read your thread and it was very informative. Unfortunately you are right about the shipping. It is around the same price as the product. As you probably know, I bought two MFW-15 subwoofers and the shipping was extremely expensive but I wanted them and so I got them. :)

Do you have coffee tri-traps ? Because the more I see that colour the more I like it. I think black and coffee go well together. Well, it's either those colours or it's beige (or off-white), not sure if they are both one and the same or different.

I hear the the Mark e Mark team is producing some nice subs these days. How do you like them?

Yes, I have the coffee tri-traps and 242, 244 panels. I also have 242 (off white) on the ceiling.

I like the contrast of the wall colour with the panel colour. It works well in your room.

What would you guys think if we did 2 color panels? Not sure of the design but had a customer ask me and wonder if that might be something that might help with the WIFE FACTOR.:)

No, you know Glenn, I'm struggling to decide whether to use the off-white color, the coffee color, a combination of both, or just stick to one color all round. I like what RMK did to the room. He used a combination of color and it suits the room.

Perhaps offering a kind of art work on the trap itself would be a possibility. I'm sure many people would like that. I don't mind personally whether the trap is plain or not but the color needs to work for me and the room.

FYI, the colors you offer are great but choosing the right one is a pain at the moment.

For example this is a good blend of color that isn't outrageous and is IMO, easy on the eyes. The treatment used here is not GIK but I thought I would post it:

Ok, that pic... this kinda drives me crazy....

its a pretty room. no doubt. But IF its to be performance-driven.....

A 3rd tower would fit perfectly fine in the middle. This kind of thing drives me nuts.

A nice modular AV rack is like $200. An RF remote system is $80. A $35 ft HDMI cable is $40. So, $300 and change, you can have the rack in the back or side of the room. (which is probably the cost of that AV stand in the middle anyways!!!). Less to get in the way physically for stereo and m-ch reproduction. No lobing. Perfectly matched. At least that one is on the same plane. Better dispersion, less reflections...

I dunno. Also, darker colors would help with video immersion when the lights are off. It's a pretty room, but IMO performance was not the primary factor. It was aesthetics & orthodox-in-the-box thinking (read uneducated thinking). JMO.

[/rant]

ps. I think two toned traps are a neat idea. However, it must be hard to come up with designs that please a lot of folks. It might be easier, and cheaper (?), to simply offer more colors/shades? Dunno.

What would be really cool is if there was some sort of "designed paint" that would NOT usurp the aborptive properties. Im sure this has already been looked into.

When your treatment is masquerading as a piece of art... now you're talking. Contact DuPont? :D

I know this is OT, but I'd like to add that by implementing my idea, there wouldn't be any distracting lights from the components. And that display looks small, IMO. I wonder how much that display costs... it wouldn't surprise me if a decent PJ would be at a similar price.

Throw in an AT screen, and you have nirvana. Ideal as it gets. Sorry, I usually don't rant like this... not usually my style here at this forum. But, would you guys consider this a dedicated HT room? I would.

Not to dwell on this as I didn't want to spawn a debate over this per se but --

At least the center speaker is positioned at a height conducive to smooth panning from left to right across the front stage.

Oh, me neither really. It's just... I've tried to recommend such a setup so many times, but no one ever seems to do it. I must be missing something. It doesn't cost anymore, that's for sure. Frustration hit critical mass. Forgive me. I will say that even at BWs website do they have a similar setup. A horizontal where the veritcal fits perfectly. Its called "marketing".

No worries. I understand where you are coming from.

Just an FYI; all those who own GIK treatment please chime in and give your impressions. If you have pictures you want to share then by all means, please do. Your comments would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

I have the following GIK Acoustic Panels for my listening room (28Lx18Wx8h):
9 242s
2 Tri Traps(just ordered 2 more for the back)
1 Monster Bass Trap

So, I really have Room Kit #4 with 3 additional 242s. I must say that I am extremely pleased with the panels. The have made a huge difference in my listening experience. The Tri Traps has definitely made my bass more accurate, and the bass excites the room very nicely. The 242s has removed the reflections that I was hearing coming from my wall and my ceiling. I must say that I was skeptical at first; but, I am glad that I went with my gut and made the purchase. Out of everything that I have purchased to for my HT System, this by far the best invest that I have made. I say don't cut yourself or your system short, get some acoustic treatments. Your system and your ears will thank you. I am extremely pleased with my system. I can stop grinning from ear to ear.: Also, thanks to Glenn, Brian, and Frank for providing me with help and guidance. This was my first shot at acoustics, and they made it easy for me.:)

I hope Carolyn doesn't see this, she has been on my butt about hanging the trap in my back corner but I told her it was too difficult.
Just a FYI,
We just did a new video (ok our first EVER video) about mounting the panels in the corner. Even if you build some yourself you could mount them pretty much this way.

Good, keep it up Glenn! Give him all the hell you can muster please! :p

JK, I just decided last night I am going to do like Greg by bringing in a treatment for music listening on the sidewall propped horizontally on the couch's back, and then remove it when Im not. I also saw this idea of manually implementing/removing them stated by WmAx in the classical speaker thread. My stereo's front wall is currently lined with treatments I scored from Audiogon. I just need a sidewall treatment sometimes in my assymetrical living room.

Glenn, questions. I'm going to buy some GIK treatments, though I haven't decided on how much thickness I will go with. First of all, I am curious which color is the best selling? Because they will not be seen, but hidden behind curtains, and I guess I'm thinking of the ease of re-sale, which probably wouldn't happen for a very long time. Just curious. This is for the HT, otoh. I did think of possibly at least one white trap, because part of it will be at a window, even with blinds, because I figure white absorbs less heat.

I know I had more questions, Im afraid a couple of them might be slipping my mind. Ah yes, I've noted that for treating the vertical boundaries in a room, that traps are mounted equidistantly from top and bottom. This is for best treatment of mid-high freq's, yes? Just curious, does this improve bass trapping at all, as opposed to sitting on the floor at the same respective angle?

I watched your install video last night. I was thinking, hey, I've seen that guy in an avatar before. :D

Another q: To the best of your knowledge, is there significant differences in higher freq absorption between the monster trap, 244, and 242. Im trying to address some slap echo. If you happen to know, what are the freq points that each thickness starts dropping off real fast with? (Is there a such term for "roll-off" with treatments?) :D

Thanks.
