Well, they definitely did a lot of that. I was fairly lazy with screen caps this Olympics due to all the macroblocking, etc. In retrospect, I wish I had recorded the opening ceremony and burned it to 3x DVD, as NBC hasn't announced a Blu-Ray of the event.

Diving was completely unwatchable. Swimming and gymnastics were painful, but not as bad as diving.

There is sexploitation w/ women's beach volleyball just by the outfits (plus the fact that there are cheerleaders). Slate mentioned something similar with this article -- http://www.slate.com/id/2197511/ .

There were a lot of good HD closeups in this Olympics. I loved the closeups of the starter blocks and the patterns on the track during the sprints.

allargon, sorry that your picture quality was so lacking. I guess that I got lucky. I have an older TV and just use an antenna for over-the-air broadcasts. NBC is a little snowy, but it was still quite enjoyable. At 27", my TV is more forgiving. :)
I use OTA for local digital/HD despite having Dish Network. There are pages long complaints on AVS and satelliteguys about the poor HD quality.

You said snowy. So, you were watching the analog SD feed. That one wasn't so bad. However, the digital HD feed was a mess. NBC always messes up HD sports. However, this one was more interesting since we were going from 50Hz to 60Hz. Hopefully, London will be a bit better.

Just noticed that Clint's been on this page for 25 minutes now.

Snap out of it, man! It's just a picture...and she's not even holding a Blu-Ray player. :D

I just got back from Vegas, and the only thing worth watching while I was down there was the Olympics (room had a 42inch plasma). I have to say, that you should really be embarrassed at how poorly NBC is covering this. There is no perspective, it's just full on American coverage. The commentator for the gymnastics (uneven bars) was horrible. It didn't matter what anyone did, or was going to do they were not going to beat the American.

Just awful.

For the most part, I agree. I was disappointed in most of the gymnastics coverage. You're totally right - they pretty much focused on the Americans and Chinese from what I saw. They finally showed some of the Bulgarians and Russians, who had some strong competitors. However, they were trying to cover it live, so they had to focus on something. I won't bash them too much for that.

I think that they did a better job with some of the individual event finals, which I think were taped from the night before and they had some time to edit the footage and decide what to show.

After watching coverage here in BC and comparing it to Vegas, the difference is night and day. Obviously Canada isn't exactly interesting to watch(least not in the summer games), but we see a much larger variety of competitors.

My favorite events of the entire olympics were the womens beach and womens indoor volleyball.

You must have missed the women runners and divers then, except for that one Muslim woman who was covered from head to toe.:D

By the way, did you watch it? Contribute to that exploitation:)

Why are beach-volleyball players always patting each other on the butt?
umm, maybe because it'd be quite painful to do NBA style chest bumps? (though it would probably be fun to see that.

if i knew there was "cheerleading" in the olympics, i would have watched a few parts :)

They did it for the ratings. They would have covered the countries more if they were competative compared to the Chinese and the Americans. Remember, none of the Olympics were "live." They picked the best stuff to watch to keep the viewers. It would have been boring to watch an American gymnist compete with a Brazilian gymnist IMO.

I would have liked to see any gymnast compete with any other gymnast, because that's what the Olympics is.

She was a sprinter from Bahrain.

It's funny that you mention that. I was commenting to my wife how there were some sprinters that were wearing sleeves. We were like, "How is that supposed to make you faster?" I said, "Well if wearing a sleeve makes you faster, why don't they wear full bodysuits?" Then we saw that runner from Bahrain. I was like, "See? There's someone that is going all the way with the sleeve thing." Then it turns out she was just covered up for religious reasons.

Did you hear her barking like a Pomerainian on that last 100 meters? Funny as hell. :D

Plus who wants to see EVERYTHING?!?! That would take forever. Sorry, but what's the point of watching someone that doesn't have a chance in hell of winning a medal? Show me the top 5 or so in each event and I'm good.

Showing live gymnastics is really hard b/c you have 4 rotations going on simultaneously, with 2 teams at each station, and it's absolutely impossible to show everything that's going on at once. Showing taped gymnastics is much, much easier. Plus- with a live event you need to focus on the pre-set stories and it becomes very hard to change in the middle. In men's gymnastics it was the dominant Chinese team, the surging rookie Americans, and the middling Japanese. For women the main story was the US and China, as well as that 35 year old German (who's actually Russian) who won a medal on the vault. The general population in the US wants to watch the best teams and the Americans (and not necessarily in that order), and in this case they were one and the same.

I don't think NBC was perfect with their general coverage, although almost all of the announcers should be shot, but they certainly did an above average job with the material they got.
