Will 4K Video & PCM 10.2 Audio fit on a 500GB BD?

That is indeed impressive, especially if it doesn't require a hardware upgrade.

Wow!

Is there even a need for Purple-ray or any other "Ray" player when they can make a 400GB and 500GB BD disc?
You could easily fit 4k video and sound on a 500GB disc. Hell you would barely need half that.

Might be out of topic but I did a test the other day with h.264 and ripped and encoded Rambo BD to h.264 and it did a spectacular job in keeping the quality of the original. I was able to put 5.1 audio and 1080p on an mp4 at a third the size of the original. Of course the process took around 19 hours on my PC but the end result was identical to the BD cept for the sound since I could not extract the lossless track. With this type of compression around and BDs getting bigger I think the possibilities are pretty much unlimited for video and audio.

19 hrs?

You are nuts!:D

Aside from the question of 4K vs 1080p practical PQ significance, I guess the only other question is will the BD players be able to play back the 4K video?

Or will we need a new technology Player (purple laser vs. blue laser, etc.) to play back the 4K?

I know we would need a new Display (TV, Projector) to play back 4K video.

There was a write up in Sound & Vision a couple of months ago on it. They were saying new display, all new format that wouldn't fit on a current discs. I'll double check tonight when I get home.

Goodness.

New TVs. New Players. And new Processors to handle the 4K Video and 10.2 Audio?

I guess we better start saving up now, huh?:D

I suppose we could keep our analog amps and stuff.:)

Oh, well, maybe it'll be 10 years from now. That's plenty of time.:D

4k video is just a resolution. As long as the disc can hold the amount of data all you need is TV and a player capable of outputting that resolution. Data is data and all that is needed is proper hardware and software to use the data. I don't know what is the max bandwidth of HDMI 1.3 but if it's capable of doing 4k video then all that is needed is a new TV and maybe the players can be upgraded to output that resolution through some sort of software like the PS3.

I already bow down to the PS3 once for the firmware update of DTS-MA.:D

I don't know what I would do if the PS3 could do a simple firmware for 4K video!!!

I'm sure a FW update could allow it, but I doubt HDMI 1.3 has the bandwidth for it, so we will have to wait for the PS4 before we can get 4k video from it.

The couple of things I've read, granted very prelim, seemed to be talking about a whole new thing... they were even lamenting a potential new format war between competing companies though much of the new standard has been agreed to.

I don't want to speak out of my butt on this, but I got the fairly strong impression we were talking new players, new tv's, new discs, new connections. They were first going to come out with 2 power, followed by 4X... kinda the way 720 migrated to 1080 I guess.

Either way, it's a ways off and will hopefully coincide with new display technology like OLED which should be leaps and bound better for that kind of resolution. I was wondering how a lamp based tv would even be capable of that. The main computer guy for my group was talking about the conference he went to and they were touting OLED in a big way for video conferencing and other business applications. Sony supposedly is on the way to solving the shelf life problem of the TV which seemed to be one of the major issues with OLED.

4k video would be worthless though without a humongous TV. We would probably need a screen like the ones in the movie theatre to really take advantage of it. Look at IMAX with 8k video and it needs a screen as high as a 2-story house. I guess we still have a bit to go before we can rival the video of a digital movie theatre. Although I read an article that older movies were all shot in 2k video so we already can take advantage of that full experience at home. Pretty soon the video will just become the same as the digital camera megapixel wars where 6MP is all that is needed unless you want the picture the size of a billboard.

Yeah and that was on a dual core opteron with 2gb of ram with the GPU doing some of the decoding as well. I am guessing with a quad core and 8gb of ram I could probably knock that time off by a bit more than half. The program I used wasn't very fancy so I am looking for something like Final Cut Pro HD which will let me have more control of the compression options and more sound options.

Thaks to the HDMI interface, your 4K video will be limited to 1 foot cable lengths!

But serieously, there will be some hardware limitations involved in a video and audio bandwidth upgrade including the players ability to read all of the layers on the disk.

A big part of me really hopes that 1080p will be the ONLY HD video format for at least 20 years.:D

I don't even want to think about upgrading to all that!

Believe me... I WILL NOT UPGRADE for 2x or 4x until my current stuff literally doesn't work anymore or I win the lotto.

1080p is already 2k video since it has a resolution of 1920x1080. 4k video on 16:9 aspect ratio would be 3840x2160.

BTW Sony already has a 4k projector out that outputs 4096 x 2160 at 1.85:1 (anamorphic). It sells for ~$50k

Edit: That projector uses DVI for the output but no HDCP support. If we stuck with DVI in the HT world we could just have unlimited resolutions and not worry about HDMI versions and enough bandwidth. I could care less if I had to use a DVI cable for video and then an HDMI cable or just plain analog for sound without the need to worry about a new HDMI standard every time the video gets upgraded.
