52" Sharp Aquos or 73" Mitsubishi DLP

I've narrowed my TV quest down to two possibilities. The Mitsubishi 73" WD73736 and the 52" Sharp Aquos LC52SE94U.

Of course, I would instinctively go with the 20 extra inches at the same price, but I've heard that the Aquos is much better for overall picture quality.

Any recommendations? Anyone have any experience with either of these TVs or similar models?

Thanks for any help,

Which of the TV's looks better to you? That's probably going to be more valuable than any advice I can give. But, here are the 2 reasons why I chose LCD over DLP:

1) "rainbow effect": When I move my eyes quickly among different parts of a DLP screen, I see the little "rainbow" at the very edge of my vision. That's the biggest reason I chose not go with DLP. I hear that it happens to a minority of people, but it's rather annoying if you happen to be one of them. I was shopping for HDTV's about 1 1/2 yrs ago, so DLP technology may have improved since then, but it's something worth checking out for yourself.

2) ambient lighting: My TV is in my living room, near some big windows. When a significant amount of light shines on or close to the screen, DLP TV's become noticeably more washed out. I believe it's due to the way the image is produced with a DLP TV (rear projection, similar to a movie theater) compared to an LCD TV. I don't want to have to turn off the lights and close the blinds whenever I want to watch regular TV, and my wife wouldn't agree to it anyways.

Just a couple of practical things to consider ...

I have never seen a "rainbow effect" on my DLP. I would go with the bigger at the same price. I have a plasma and a LCD and the DLP looks as good as either of these.

I have a Mitsu 73733 and a Sharp Aquos 46D82U and I can honestly say the Aquos has a better picture, but the extra size of the 73" is very hard to beat. Both are great, but having the flat panel also means never having to change a bulb, and the viewing angles on the aquos are great. But you still need to take viewing distance in to account, I'm 12 feet from the 73" and it looks amazing, but just doesn't have the same picture quality of the Sharp. Maybe the Mitsu diamond series looks a good bit better than the medalion series, I don't know, but either tv will do you right. I also notice no rainbow effect with the DLP.

Are you absolute on just these two as being options?

I would go with the Sharp as they are rated very well...and DLPs have to be very dark to watch...

My budget is around $3000 for the TV. I'm open to other options, also. The main question is whether to go with the size or the better quality. Is the better picture worth 20 inches less?

I have the 65833 Mits Diamond 65" and I can tell you that I don't think you'll be giving up quality. The picture is pretty outstanding once you get it dialed in. Plus, let's just say there was a difference in quality, I don't believe it be nearly enough to warrant giving up the screen space. At 73", you're talking about a whole different experience than a 52". Hell, even the 65" is a different experience.

I have no rainbow effect issues on my tv. Neither me nor my family notice anything like that with the set. Also, I think one of the high points about he DLP is that actually performs well in ambient light conditions because it's so damn bright.

Unless you're just looking for the cool factor of a flat screen... which is certainly a valid criteria in my book and one I struggled with on my own, I'd say give the DLP a serious consideration. You're talking night and day difference if you're talking about an overall cinematic experience. Size does matter and good quality size matters even more and I think the MIt's is a quality performer.

How much control will you have over the lighting in your room? The mitsubishi is pretty bright, but the Aquos can get very bright, and it can also auto adjust the brightness if you want it to by adjusting the backlight, and you can even control the range of backlight adjustment. But it is very hard to beat the viewing experience of a 73" tv, but after a while you start to get used to it and it doesn't seem quite as big as it did when you first got it. Both are great sets and you will be happy with either one.

There's a lot to be said for the bigger screen. I think you get a lot more immersed in a good movie, especially scifi or action.

But you're right though, you do get used to. My neighbor's got a 57 inch Samsung. When he first got it, I though it was just huge. Then I got my 65" and though HOLY BIG TV BATMAN!!!!!!

Now... my tv seems "appropriate" my neighbor's... absolutely too small.

That's definitely not true of rear projection DLP. You must be thinking of front projectors.

Smeagol, is there any reason the Panny/Pioneer plasmas aren't being considered?
