My Philips DVD player 762 (which has built in decoder for home theatre) has started "hanging" after about 30 minutes playing. When the disc is ejected, it is quite warm. The player will not function until it is allowed to cool down.
I have opened the case and can see no signs of any overheating component.
The case has no ventilation slots whatsoever (so presumably is not supposed to generate much heat). Anyone know of a solution?
I'm not sure what you mean when you say 'it has a built in decoder' as most DVD players do this as far as I know.
Unfortunately, if this is the case, then this is a manufacturer issue and you likely need to contact them to see if it is under warranty.
You do want to be sure that you aren't stuffing the DVD player between or on top of a bunch of other gear which may get really hot which will superheat what is inside.
Likewise, if it no longer is in that situation, but was, then the player may already have had fatal damage done to it.
If you just HAVE to use this player, and just do NOT want a new player, then you could open things up. Take the lid off, drill a bunch of ventilation holes into it, run it with a fan blowing on it, etc. Not sure if that would help either, but it sure as heck would void any warranty you might have.
