How about your other speakers? Towers or bookshelf? Powering them with a receiver or an outboard amplifier? You see, we just need more info so as to better serve you.

Having said that my favorite sub is the SVS line which goes from $429 to $1699.

You can even go multiple PB13-Ultra for even larger sound though some say when you get to that level they prefer the JBL Audio Fathom f113 for $3,600.

But if you have the $100K blank check one poster had you might want a JBL Gotham g213 at $12,000 retail. With that the Jurassic Park Trynnosaurus Rex will be in you den right beside you!

HSU and SVS are 2 HIGHLY recommended subs. I would recommend trying or listening to either of these 2 companies subwoofers.

A vote here for the JL line. FWIW, the bigger ones won't always be better. The smaller models usually can have better linear response to higher frequencies, allowing an easier blend with bookshelves. OTOH, the bigger models are more efficient. Best subs I've ever heard. Im sure there's some awesome DIYs out there... just never heard them.

If it's for 100% music and you are not looking for big extension I really like the Martin Logan Dynamo @$599. I am trying to build a small sealed stereo sub myself but if the final outcome is not that good, I will definitely be getting one or two Dynamo's for a stereo setup.

If all you're looking for is music performance and no other factors, you might as well get a subwoofer that plays movies well. They're exact same thing, except a movies require more extension.

well there are few subs that play flat accross the same spl, for me the velo dd18(over the 1812)would be the one on paper, then the Genelec HTS6(insane size), followed by jlf213... Sooo many variables

IMO, a good sub is a good sub, no matter what you feed to it.

To add to that, as the whole frequency range the sub is playing is at the total mercy of the room, almost any subwoofer (or preferably, subwoofers) will be "musical" if room interaction has been addressed.

I have listened to the DD-18 and read real good things about the JL F213. I was trying to figure out if there is better then those. Looked a Epic Conquest also.

For comercially available subs, the JL Audio Fathom series woofers have made their way into the "reference subwoofer" arena for many reviewers. Especially when done in pairs.

The SVS Ultra is a great sub too.

DIY options give one excellent performance while keeping the budget low.

A high quality sub, DIY or otherwise, coupled with a high quality processor such as the Behringer DCX2496 will yield any response wanted in virtually any room. The higher quality of baseline performance (subwoofer or subwoofers) the more easily the response can be tailored to the listener's liking.

1. I owned a Hsu Research VTF-3 HO Turbo, and it was very musical although it was ported. Sounded great

2. The ULS 15 is a sealed sub, and many agree that sealed subs are more "punchy" or "tight". I expect nothing less than the best from this design.
