To add to that, as the whole frequency range the sub is playing is at the total mercy of the room, almost any subwoofer (or preferably, subwoofers) will be "musical" if room interaction has been addressed.

great post...

Im pretty sure taz is aware of the importance of setup and room correction, and while this may have just as easy been a poll type question(besides everyone proseptives are always good), its threads like this one that when someone lurking by sees how many factors come into play when intergrating a sub into a home theater.

DIY is the best way if you are capable. I find Subwoofers based on Aluminum or Magnesium drivers, distort a lot less. See if you want to spend a few hours and assemble a kit from Parts Express.

Cone material is only one part of the equation. It is a sum of the parts that matters. A linear motor & suspension coupled with a pistonic cone usually yields a well performing driver.

Try not to focus on just one area of a subwoofer's design.

Is anybody familiar with Subs from REL and Earthquake? Ive been told they're pretty darn good but how do they compare to subs that are normally discussed here- HSU and SVS?

Don't know that it's the best, but it definitely would be a contender for "any price". The page is a bit messy and poorly translated from Italian, but scroll down and check out the pictures.

They claim efficiency of 120dB, and peak power capability of 6400 watts, which is 160 dB. Um, that might hurt.
Thanks for the link Tod. Those pictures make me look sane!
