It's most likely not a scam, those idiots have their hands in just about everything as of late.

Ive gotten 2 letters from them in the last year pertaining to goods shipped from overseas & meant for me that they seized,i replied to the 1st letter stating BFD,the 2nd letter i just tossed out without ever reading.

Gene is a scam MAGNET. Ask him about, not Homeland Security, but his former Home Security company experience... lol.

Anybody who tells me they have to meet at my house for any reason can kiss my beautiful round buttocks unless they show up at my door, in uniform, with ID, and armed.
Tis true. I think since I spend so many years debunking myths and fallacies that the side effect is that scams come looking for me. Perhaps its revenge from the exotic cable vendors :D

Inform Homeland security that a PI is presenting himself as an HS agent.

I would be willing to bet that this is illegal activity...he should have presented himself as working for..not as the real deal.

Cheers, John
I've been trying. I pulled this # off their website and all that happens when you call it is the phone keeps ringing until it eventually disconnects:

Citizen Line
Operator Number: 202-282-8000

so much for our tax dollars at work.

Gene,

I've had more than a bit of experience with government security issues. The situation you describe is pure bunkum. This imbecile is lying to you...whether he's a PI or a scammer. This is not how the government, any agency, does security or background checks, and for certain your compliance or mandatory "in-home" interviews are NOT required. In-person interviews, OTOH are commonplace. If you want to make a meeting with him, do it at your time of convenience and at a place you feel secure. I'd also require a prior written (letterhead) request. He can't require you to do anything.

Your friend could have been a little more considerate of you by letting you know he put you down as a reference for a classified job.

In any event, remember, ID's can be forged. Anyone can get loads of information about you with ten bucks and an internet connection...or even just participating in this forum. We have members who "specialize" in finding information about other members. (Ask your mods. At least one will know what I'm talking about.)

There is something about your caller that stinks worse than Majorloser's socks. :D (J/K Dave. Your socks smell okay. ;))

Out of curiosity what is your friend's nationality background? Reason I ask is because when I was in the military I need a higher than normal security clearance for my job so it required a more thorough background check. Since I lived many years in Panama as a child they needed a contact from there as well. I gave them my best friend's contact info and the DOD security department ended up calling him in Panama. All they did was a few questions on the phone and that was about it. Now the thing is they never told him they were a specific government agency and all they said was that I was going to work for the US government and they needed a background check. That's why it's very strange that the guy wanted to meet you in person. They even talked to my uncle who lives in the US and they got all they needed over the phone.

Not even when my old Sgt. was applying for a Pentagon position they required an interview of anyone he knew for the background check. Also in a background check such as these all they ask is if you know the person and just ask questions based on facts that you give them about the reference and nothing more. That in-home interview thing is just a crock and you should contact your local FBI office if you cannot get a hold of Homeland Security. You will get through to someone a lot faster by the local FBI office.

Alas I got my friend on the phone. He says the guy is nothing more than a PI contracted by Homeland since my friend applied for a job with them. The guy is a stooge and trying to act important and powerful.
So, he does sound like he has some legit function, stooge or not.
I would think your friend had other references interviewed; I wonder how they handled this guy?
If the ultimate goal is to help your friend get the job, what choice do you have?

Don't let him touch the HT equipment.:D
Good Luck,
Rick

Now he wants to come to my home to meet us both and he stated that NOT as an option I can refuse but a mandatory proceeding.
After finding out that he isn't a government offical but instead a contracted PI (i.e. stooge) he has no power to enforce policy of the contracted agency as I understand it. So for him to indentify himself as with Homeland security might not be entirely false, it still a shady move and combined with the statement above I would have serious doubts about letting this guy in my house.

Our company had dealings with NSA before it was publicly admitted that NSA existed and was indeed funded by hidden military budget allocations. They had you sign a document when you went in that made you agree to never say you'd been there! ("No, I John Smith, agree to say that I have never been to this NSA facility nor admit to its existence.") :D No "in-home" background checks were ever required for anyone at the highest levels of clearance.

I agree with Gus, keep trying the HS office or try the FBI.

Oh, by the way, I'VE NEVER BEEN TO ANY NSA FACILITY.

Yea I played his VM again and he said he was a "special investigator with Homeland Security". When I called him he said he works at a local office in Clearwater for homeland security.

When he calls back I will tell him I did my own little investigation and found out he's nothing more than a PI. I will at best offer him a phone interview solely to help my friend but I will NOT meet this guy NOR will he step foot on my property without getting a boot in his A** or a Velodyne DD15 flung at him!

Seriously, I have no life.
Ok it gets even weirder now.

I tried calling my friends homephone since his brother and dad still live there and it's been disconnected.

The callerID for this homeland guy is listed as his name NOT Homeland and he told my wife that is his cell#. He says he is with the local branch in Clearwater Florida. I will need to look that up to see if it even exists.
You may want to call their DC office and see if you can talk to someone if this procedure is in fact correct and about their local office.
May even want to ask if this person works for them.
