My new Bose "bass module"

I acquired an AM-500 Bose "bass module" for $20 last night. Its a model from somewhere between 1995-1998. I figured the price was pretty good and that because it was Bose, it had to be at least decent. I got home and hooked up the inputs to my B speaker channel and left my klipsch in channel A, bypassing the crossover on the module. The module surprisingly complements the klipsch pretty well for what it is, and didnt intrude on the sound signature of the klipsch in a bad way at all (its not boomy or muddy). The module extends down to 40 Hz cleanly and starts to roll off from there. There are some peaks in the frequency range, but nothing too major or immediate. There isnt any port noise and the bass is nice and warm. Id say that it gave me the right amount of extra thump and rumble that my klipsch were lacking, while making the bass guitar notes just a tad more audible. However, over very fast bass passages, things can get a bit sloppy. But the speed of the driver is still adequate enough for anything you throw at it. I also like the way the module looks :)

I know alot of people here hate Bose and I can understand why. Im personally not very fond of them either. Their stuff is a bit overpriced, over marketed, and over rated by people who dont understand anything about audio. However, I think calling Bose "garbage" is a bit too extreme. Ive heard the Bose 3-2-1, Wave radio, 301, and Lifestyle V20. And to be honest, they all sounded pretty good (except for the 321), just not $1000 good (or whatever the ridiculous price was). But price tag aside, Bose is still decent upper mid-fi stuff. This is deffinitly a temporary sub, and im already looking to make some profit off of it. But for now, im satisfied for $20. And it really dosent sound bad at all. It dosent sound really good either, but its deffinitly not garbage, and its better than alot of subs ive heard.

As far as the Bose systems Ive heard, they seem to have good 3D imaging, soundstage and overall clear sound. But they lack mids and the low lows big time. You can tell just by the sound signature that its targeted for average consumers. It does sound "pleasant", But bose is definitely not natural sounding at all, which makes their systems pretty crappy for critical listening. Its almost like an artificially enhanced sound geared at emphasizing the frequencies that tickle the human ear. Im not one for that kind of sound signature. But I know alot of uneducated ears that prefer this smiley faced EQ type of sound, which is why alot of people like bose.

Just thought id throw that out there.

Mabey I should of said just mid-fi. To me, low-fi is old stuff back in the 50s and below, when stuff was still mono. Mid-fi is $250 Sony walmart stereos with "mega bass", and high end is Onkyo, Denon, paradigm, Axiom, Klipsch, etc... To me, bose lies at the upper end of those walmart stereos.

Thanks for the review, Eyedrop. I'm glad that you like it and that it's working out for you. $20 is a great price for even a moderate system improvement!

Its just a slight to moderate improvment. What I really want is a better room. Its square shaped and makes the klipsch a little bright and the notes blur from the awful reflections. Im thinking about going to a lumberyard or old construction sight to get some crappy wood and housing insulation or cheap fiberglass. My friend is good with woodworking.

Im also getting back into the headphone thing. My Grado/Alessandro MS-1 sounds a little more detailed and flat than my stereo, and they are only $100 headphones. Ive been thinking of selling my stereo and getting a pair of awesome cans. Im on a budget and cant afford huge upgrades. I want a pair of STAX or Sony MDR-SA5000 so I can set free and unlock all the hidden stuff in my music ive never heard before.

That's cool that you have a friend that is good at that. A number of people here have good things to say about acoustic panels.

My brother has a couple pairs of headphones that he really likes and said the same sort of thing when he got them - that he could hear things that he'd never heard before. For me, it would be an easier task to accomplish - I'd just need to take the plastic wrap off some CDs that I bought back in 1993 and never opened. :)

Haha. Thats about as good as it gets, besides vinyl or SACD/DVD-A with a good set of cans.

Picking on Bose is small minded and for rookies, its like making fun of a retarted person but Bose is not Mid, or low fi it is no-fi and at $20 you still payed more for the bass "module" than it cost to make.

Chad...come on, dude. He bought something, hooked it up, and is happy with it. Does the manufacturing cost really matter? Heck, I'm sure the 10 cents that I paid for my single serving of Trident gum is far more than it costs to manufacture (given distribution costs and retail markup), but I'm still quite pleased with the cost-to-satisfaction ratio. It's just so darn tasty...

I bet you anything if it was Sony, Logitech, or Creative and not Bose, nobody would have anything bad to say about it. Mind you, Im pretty sure a logitech z-5500 sub would probably perform better than this bose. But like me and Adam said, its still good for $20.

I would be willing to bet that a majority of the people who slam Bose, has never even owned anything made by them. They are really going by some numbers or opinions they read somewhere. I havent owned anything made by Bose to give a honest opinion on them. If you like it.....play it loud

I'm not a fan of Bose, however for $20 there is not much to lose here. The fact that you like the sound better with the module than without tells me that spending $20 was worth it for you. Maybe when you get sick of the thing you can take it apart and post some pictures of the guts of this notorious subwoofer...I mean bass module....

You'll have to excuse Chad. When he was a boy, Dr. Bose killed his father.

There's a reason why those who slam Bose have never owned their overpriced junk...they've heard it and would never buy it!

After about 10 minutes of listening to one of their home theatre systems, I had to leave the room because it was so fatiguing. The only Bose systems I own are in my cars, and that's because they are definitely better than stock, but still crap compared to an aftermarket system.

Yes, its overpriced. But its far from junk. I would much rather own a bose system than an aiwa, panasonic, durabrand, etc... Those are junk.

And I garuntee my klipsch are far more fatiguing than bose. In fact, I find the Bose sound has a good balance in between laid back and harsh.

I have to agree that Bose is better than a lot of sourced crap that hits the market. It's expensive and it's not "flat" but it's not as bad as some HTiB systems or Wal-mart specials I've heard. Perspective would be a good thing for our forum readers to have when talking about Bose products.

Now the Wave Radio - THAT is a piece of dung, however.

I bet I have owned two LifeStyle systems and both of my cars have Bose in them. So, all in all, I have own 4 of them and they all 4 sounded really bad.
