speaker placement

i am placeing speakers in my basement and am wondering the height i should put my rear speakers... i have a drop ceiling so i can hang them basically anywhere... the area i want to hit is about 12' wide and 12' back approx. my rears are yamaha ns-333s... basically i want to know if they should be close to the ceiling and aimed at the listening area or lower by the actually seating area... thanks!

rule of thumb is:

tweeter height of the surround speaker should be 2-3 feet above listener's ears. typical listener's ears are around 41-43"

that is perfect for my rears... is there a general rule of thumb for fronts also then as long as they are not floor standing obviously

I would keep your front speakers at ear level, depending on the height of your speaker and on a flat surface I think 24" to 31" stands would be a good. I sat on my couch with a tape measure and measured from my ears to the floor and that gave me a pretty good reference point

the front left and right tweeters should generally be around 40-43" in height

since the center and the display both need to be that height, the center will have to give way, and just tilt it to face your head.
