What exactly are teh differences in this, other than the fact of getting a mediocre at best gaming system with it ;)

I mean, are there going to be any quality differences? I had heard once upon a time that they didn't use the greatest hardware in the PS3..

The PS3's hardware is actually pretty good. Since the system still receives firmware updates on a regular basis making it a better performing machine. The upscaling on stand alone Blu-ray players, for example, are fixed for DVD. The PS3 is upgradable by software, meaning it can get much better in the future. It can also decode all the HD audio formats internally and output them over HDMI as multichannel High Resolution PCM negating the need for a receiver that features on-board DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Plus decoders.

My opinion is biased because I am using a PS3 as a Blu-ray player. The PQ is obviously significantly better with Blu-ray making it an instant win over DVD. I can't say I have compared the PS3 to any other Blu-ray player on anything other than what I have read (specs, reviews). The biggest advantage in my mind is that it is a very good gaming system. Unfortunately Sony has very few games that warrant purchasing the PS3 for gaming only. I do think that Sony intends to step it up a notch for Christmas and after since the PS2 will be discontinued.

On top of gaming and DVD/Blu-ray playback it also works well as a music/video server.

Hold an xbox 360 and then a PS3 in your hand and then come back and tell which ones feels better built to you. Just by that alone you can tell which one has the better parts and QC.

lol I knew the whole mediocre at best comment would get someones tailfeathers ruffled.

Anyways, I'm not comparing the PS3 to the 360 in this sense, sort of a one sided battle with blu-ray isn't it? ...Just wanted a cpmparison with the PS3 and standalone Blu ray. I wont game with it, so is it still viable to get the PS3 version for any reason or no?

To answer your question, the PS3 is one of the best Blu-ray players available, and is easily as good as more expensive players.

So I am guessing you consider the Xbox 360 a superior gaming machine?
My opinion, games and online gaming are better on the 360. I am more used to the controls on the PS3 and I am more concerned about the Blu-ray playback. The few games I do actually want to play have come out on the PS3, so the games don't affect me so much. The online support for the PS3 is sorta lame.

What if I don't care about FPS games though. The majority of the Xbox 360's library consists of FPS games.

I own all the latest gaming systems, and I think the PS3 is a fantasic gaming machine as well as Blu Ray player. It's wireless capabilities and often firmware updates make it very desireable as a blu ray player. It does pretty much everything you could ask a blu ray player to do, and is very competetive in price as well. I say the only reason not to get a PS3 for blu ray is if you specifically need a player that has 5.1/7.1 analog outputs, if you don't, then by all means go PS3.

The only downside to having a PS3 for your Blu-Ray source is that it's not a traditional audio/videophile style component and has the whole remote thing (that doesn't seem to be a problem for most)

For me, even though I know it's easily one of the best bd players available, I just don't want a gaming system in my rack. Silly? Foolish? Maybe... probably, but it doesn't change how I feel. I'm waiting for the new SONY and Panny players due in July.

If you don't care about having a piece of equipment that looks like a glossy George Foreman grill in your rack, than it's a no brainer. There's really not a more capable machine out there... or at least not for anywhere near the cost.

Another satisfied PS3 BR player user here. I don't really use it for gaming...ever. The PS3 really is a great bargin for a BR player right now, and has some of the easier firmware upgrading you'll ever do. For the price, I don't think it can be beat.

PS3 rocks Blu Ray

One of the Blu Ray review sites LHi Def Digest) I read list that they have all state of the art equipment to review movies on. Their blu ray player of choice? PS3!

I own one, and have it paired to a yamaha 663. My Ps3 decodes DTS HD MA 7.1. How many stand alone Blu Ray players do that?

My ps3 found my wireless network and updated itself.

I'm a huge movie buff, I have a 105" screen and an Optoma HD70 projector, I've got nothing but good things to say about my PS3 as a Blu Ray player.

As of right now the PS3 has issues with Lions Gate movies that have DTS-HD/MA 7.1. It will output the soundtrack at 5.1 unless you force the PS3 to do 7.1. All other movies from the other studios work fine though. Apparently the problem is with the way Lions Gate encodes their stuff but from what I have read the new releases from them will not be having that problem.

Funny you should say that since a LARGE selection of the games for the PS3 are all FPS.
