If that is your only worry about cylinders, you might consider buying one anyway, and adding a couple of layers of strong carpet to the outside of it. That way, your cat can claw up the carpet you add, without any real harm done. And when it looks bad, remove the shredded carpet, and put on new, thus giving your cat a good scratching post, and you can have magnificent bass.
This should have no effect on the sound, provided, of course, that you do not cover the opening at the bottom or the port opening at the top when you add carpet to it.
