SVS SB12+ or Sunfire HRS-12?

Both have similar footprints, profiles and prices, both are generally reviewed well. I am looking for 90% HT 10% music was hoping people could weigh in on which is the better sub

My budget is flexible but the footprint is not (just sold my F112 as it didn't fit in the space) The Bravus and Velodyne seem like the other contenders in the high ouput 14" sealed sub space

Is height a restriction? I ask because I was in the same situation with a restricted footprint, and I went with a cylinder sub and couldn't be happier. Just a thought.

I just got the HRS-12 a few weeks ago and I am in love with it. I was a little nervous at first about the size vs. output. after hooking it up, I have to tell you, this thing rocks the house. I listen to 50/50 music/movies. every note is tight and acurate and not boomy or muddy. Movies sound incredible. Even at low volume the effect is still impressive. One Giant step up from my 12" speakercraft. I highly reccomend this, you will not be dissapointed

If that is your only worry about cylinders, you might consider buying one anyway, and adding a couple of layers of strong carpet to the outside of it. That way, your cat can claw up the carpet you add, without any real harm done. And when it looks bad, remove the shredded carpet, and put on new, thus giving your cat a good scratching post, and you can have magnificent bass.

This should have no effect on the sound, provided, of course, that you do not cover the opening at the bottom or the port opening at the top when you add carpet to it.

Interesting point about the carpets I'll definately look into it although I think that would look a little off aesthetically - will prbably stick with a traditional box design...

Typically, one places a subwoofer in a corner, and you could have other things in front of it. That way, it may not appeal to your cat. You can also buy your cat a separate scratching post, and spray it with essence of catnip to encourage your cat to prefer that post. It is a good idea to have a scratching post for your cat anyway, as it is good for the cat, the cat will enjoy it, and it will make you less likely to get angry with your cat when it does what cats naturally do. You will want to place it where you think your cat will enjoy it. If you are mistaken, try it in different places until your cat is happy with its location.

I'm considering both of these subwoofers as well, mostly for WAF. I'm curious to see some actual discussion about the OP's aforementioned subs-the extra ideas are helpful, but the original question has not been answered yet either.

You are welcome. It is good to think about what your cat will do (as you are doing), if you have one. Some people are stupid about such things, getting a pet with little thought, and then they are surprised and upset when the pet does what it naturally does. A cat with claws will use them, and it is good to be prepared for that. One should not be angry with one's cat for doing what comes naturally to a cat; if one does not like such things, one should not have a cat. It isn't the cat's fault that one chose to have a cat for a pet.

I think you are right that if you have a cylinder subwoofer from SVS accessible to it, the cat will likely want to use it for a scratching post. The cloth covering on most of them* makes it almost like things that are designed to be scratching posts. If you cannot make it inaccessible to your cat, you will probably want to do the added carpet idea. I suggest black carpeting, so it will not be so noticeable, but, of course, it depends upon your decor what would be best.

*SVS at one time made some cylinder subwoofers with wood veneer, but I don't think they make them anymore. If my memory is correct, they were very expensive.
