My Room: long and narrow...27'x11'x7.5' = 2228 cubic feet. One standard size doorway to a room about equal in size.

I have an Energy S10.3 sub that is not quite doing it for HT. I do not use the sub for music listening.
(I would post a link to this sub but I not have enough posts, sorry.)

Would you add a second S10.3 sub or replace the current sub with something like the SVS PB12-Plus or an HSU VTF-3 HO
Physically, I do not want to go any bigger than one of these two.

Obviously adding a second S10.3 would be much cheaper but if I'm not going to get the same impact as a larger more powerful sub, I don't mind spending the extra money.

I'm not sure my wife would appreciate the cylinder sub as much as I would!!!
If you are really not sure how she would feel about a cylinder, you can talk to her about it. The cylinder subwoofers tend to "disappear" in a corner of the room, particularly when the lights are low. They take up less floor space than a comparable box subwoofer, and are more lightweight than a comparable box subwoofer. You can also tell her how you are saving money, as the cylinders tend to be cheaper (both in official price and in shipping costs) than comparable boxes. And tell her you will take her out to dinner with the savings, or buy her something nice with that money; perhaps flowers and good quality chocolate.

If you can afford it, this would be what I would buy:

As rnatalli said, "When in doubt, buy bigger and better". Or just better.

And with this subwoofer, you can probably be safe in promising your wife that you will never upgrade or replace it, as long as it lasts. That translates to future savings, which she may appreciate as well.

In my case, I own two of the old SVS CS-Ultras (with the "little" 12" woofers), and I do not plan on ever upgrading. After all, with flat bass response down to about 15 Hz, and the ability to play room shaking loud, why would I upgrade? My wife is happy that I do not want to spend any more money on subwoofers for my home theater, and probably yours would be, too.

I'll second that recommendation. I bought one last year and have no regrets at all. It really does come down to if you and your wife like the look of the cylinders, but I highly recommend that one. I went back and forth between a box and a cylinder, and ended up with the cylinder for the reasons that Pyrrho listed: cheaper, less floor space, and lighter. Well, those, and I honestly just wanted to try a different look. The cylinder looks better in person than it does in the photos, IMO.

I know several SVS customers have been known to go "when in doubt about waf, just sneak it in when she's not there and have flowers ready"

Granted that's probably not the best way to go in most cases...

A possible change in tactics.

After talking with my significant other, she confessed to not liking the look of my Energy RC-70 speakers in our room. I gave this some thought and I think I would be happy with bookshelfs and an excellent subwoofer. I started with Energy RC-10's in the front and was never unhappy with them.

So the question....is the PC-Ultra an excellent sub for music. I care much more about my music than I do HT.

I'm pretty sure my wife would be happier with the a big sub and booksehelfs over a big sub and big towers!!! :)

The Ultra is been stated to be simply amazing with music, its an extremely accurate, clean and spectacular dual role sub...

How about having your sweet lady take a look at something like my bedroom setup..

That is one of the reasons why people go to the higher end products for the elegant design... There are ton's of used stuff on Audiogon, for a great price, instead of buying new.... Certainly worth the savings...
