Hey guys,

Some DVDs contain DTS MA. I have a few questions

1. Is it only Blue ray that contains this HD audio/ DTS MA or can a Standard DVD contain this that can be played on a standard Dvd player with digital outs.

2. If you have a Receiver that decodes True HD/ DTS MA can you listen to it via an optical out from the dvd player or does it have to be run through HDMI???

thanks for help. I am looking into upgrading from htr 5960 to rx v663.

I think you have to run it threw HDMI but I could be wrong. Someone should chime in though.

It is only Blu-Ray and HD-DVD that have DTS MA & Dolby True HD. To the best of my knowlege neither can be currently played on a regular dvd player, just a high-def player.

So far optical connectors only carry a signal of up to 5.1 channels of HD audio (7.1 regular audio). HDMI will carry up to 7.1. If your hd/bd player has an optical connection it should be able to send a signal to your reciever. You can choose to decode at the player or the reciever, depending on what you have and it's capabilities.

There is a deal on the Denon 2808ci for $500 posted in the deals section. For that price point I think its a nicer reciever and will do more than the Yamaha 663.

Thanks a lot. Understood however, I thought HD DVD was over with and they stopped making them? I thought Blue Ray was the only HIgh def out there. I am assuming buying toshiba A2 is a waste.

And who knows what will happen with blue ray?

Optical cannot carry DTS-HD or TrueHD at full resolution in any amount of channels. If you select Dolby TrueHD for output with optical it strips the HD audio down to standard Dolby Digital 5.1, same for DTS-HD. DRM doesn't allow SPDIF (the digital connection signified most often by Optical or Coaxial) to pass anything beyond 2 channel PCM 48khz or standard Dolby Digital (supports 6.1 Dolby EX) and DTS streams (supports 6.1 DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 on standard DVD only).

The only two ways you will get HD audio from Blu-ray will be by analog connections from the Blu-ray player (if it supports this feature) or by HDMI (bitstream or converted to multichannel LPCM). Optical will give you audio output, but not high resolution. The audio over SPDIF will be compressed to meet the SPDIF/DRM standards.

Too my knowledge no "STANDARD DVD" features DTS-HD, only Blu-ray and HD DVD on select titles should support these audio formats.
