Advice with Home Theatre System

I'm currently looking for a surround sound system. I am just looking for a receiver and speakers. I have a 46" Sony LCD and am using a PS3 for the blu-ray player. My current budget is around $1200-$1300. I went to a local Home theatre store and they offered me a package which consists of a receiver Denon AVR-1908 and speakers SLS EG5000 for about $1300. I'm just curious to know if those are a good set to get or if i could get something a little better for the money. I'm currently using 2 HDMI cables, 1 from hd cable box to TV and 1 from the ps3 to the TV. I also want to find a receiver that will play DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD for future wise. I've heard good things about the Onkyo TX-SR605 as well but not sure what else is good for the money.
Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Check out the Audioholics recommended systems. I believe there's one for $1k.

A bit out of the price range, and worth every penny over budget.

The system I was going to recommend when I read your thread is the SVS system that jcPanny link'd for you. This system should put you about $250 over budget with a receiver.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies guys! The svs system does sound good, i just wanted to see if there were any other options out there. $250 over budget is no problem at all. I just like to see how close I can stick to my budget! ;) I haven't head of Ascend Acoustics, how reputable are they?

Since I've never heard the Ascend speakers before, which would be better sounding? Mainly for movies and regular tv, sometimes music.

HT system

If these options are out of your budget, consider starting with a 2.1 or 3.1 system and adding the surround channels when budget allows. A quality 3.1 system will sound much better than a 7.1 HTIB system. Speakers are the most critical audio component.

I totally agree with JCPanny. I actually started out with 2.0 (no money for the sub) which I then upgraded to 2.1 before scrapping it all and building a 5.1 system. There's nothing wrong with building incrementally as your budget allows, and I think it actually helps you gain an appreciation for the different components. When I went from 2.0 to 2.1 I was totally blown away at the difference just adding a subwoofer could make on the listening experience.
