Have you considered those outdoor type speakers?

Those outdoor concert type speakers have HUGE woofers (12" or 15"), and can play LOUD. And they are quite sensitive, any ordinary receiver should be able to drive them ear splitting levels.

RBH TK (KT??)5(dang can't remember the model name). Check out the review here at audioholics.

Supposedly have way deep bass for a speaker under $1,000. I wanted to hear them, but RBH never got back to me.

Why no sub? You will have a hard time measuring up to a sub with a tower.

agreed. bookshelves + sub or cheap towers + sub is way better than an expensive tower trying to reproduce bass.

I agree that a sub with towers sounds better, but you are trading off other things if you go to a bookshelf.

You will most likely give up some detail in the mid range and trebble.

Before you go the bookshelf + sub route, go somewhere and see if you can a/b a tower vs bookself and sub and see what you like more.

You can always start with a decent tower and add a sub later.

If loud and lots of bass is what you want you should be looking at Cerwin Vega. They aren't the most accurate, but they are very efficient (meaning even modest receivers would be able to power them to levels of uncomfortable level with no problem). They also typically have large drivers that move lots of air producing large quantities of bass, while not the most accurate, it's sure to shake your dwelling.;)

You can get a way using towers if their role is music only.Thats what I do But if you are going into HT, I'd sugggest a sub as well. I use my towers set to small whne in HT mode.

I would look into getting some def tech towers with the powered subs built in. See if you can find some used ones on ebay that fit your budget.

Do you merely want loud bass, or do you want good bass? There is a huge difference.

Very good point.

That's like saying you want the girl with the biggest boobs and, well, we've all seen some of those pictures, haven't we? Bigger ain't always better, is it?

If brand new: Definitive BP7006 for $850:

http://digitalcraze.com/results8.asp?Manufacturer=definitive technology&Category=&StartItem=1&ItemsPage=all

I bought a pair of Definitive BP10Bs brand new for $700 from my local dealer and I'm sure I would be able to get the BP7006s for the same price.

David G. on this forum could also get you those prices brand new.

Or like GlocksRock says, if you can get them on eBay (or other sites) for cheap, it' even better.

Frequency Response:

Definitive Anechoic chamber:
BP7006: 29 Hz - 20 kHz +/-3dB
BP10B: 30 Hz - 20 kHz +/-3dB.

Julian Hirsch/Stereo Review:
BP10B: 25 Hz - 20 kHz +/-3dB & 20 Hz - 20 kHz +/-6dB.

Quite a deal on those BP7006s. Def Tech's website lists them at $1300/pr.

Huh....a good book and a sub works very well and you will not be giving up mid range and highs.

I have always wondered how they can support those two, things. I mean, wont those, things, give you a HUGE backache? How can they even breathe with those two huge things hanging in front of their chest?

Some men ignore "butterface" so long as there are big boobs involved.

*I mean to offense to the opposite sex, just saying how some men are.;)*

Yes, huge, droopy breasts can be rather unpleasant. Bigger certainly isn't always better.

But the initial question that Joe Schmoe asked is extremely important when trying to recommend something for bass. Does one want accurate, deep bass, or just the most bass possible?

What some want would be torture for others...

I always heard that more than a mouthful is a waste. Either way, I agree with the sentiment expressed.

I can see the moderators clammering to edit or close this thread now.:D

For the record, I never said I liked them big, because I don't. I don't understand men that only go for big and big only.
