Floorstanding 5.1 setup for about $2K?

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for the best 5.1 value in this price range. Details:

- My room is about 15 x 20ft with 11ft ceilings and open archways.
- Yamaha V663 on order, Sharp 50" LCD arriving tomorrow.
- Would like floorstanding speakers in the front, about 80% movies
- Currently have Bose system and looking to improve base and center channel performance.

I did visit the local Magnolia & Tweeter store and nobody was that helpful. I feel like I am choosing these things blind. Here is my short list, but I am open to suggestions:

- Magnolia recommended the Klipsch Reference Series. Seemed nice (did get to listen to these), about $2K, but no discounting
- Vanns has a closeout sale on the Infinity Beta Series, and can get a really nice setup for about $1.3K(my first choice as of now)
- Axiom Epic 50 with 350 sub is about $2.3K
- I can get new JBL ES series for about $1.6K or Infinity Classia for about $2.5K

I want something decent, with good build quality, but I also appreciate a good value. Your advice and suggestions are appreciated.

I definitely agree with AcuDefTechGuy. Try out the Aperion. It's a no cost if you decide to not purchase. The only downside is that you'll pay up-front first. Nothing unusual about that. I own the little siblings to the 633-Ts and love them (533-Ts, these have to have a subwoofer, additionally).

If Magnolia won't discount the price at all on the Klipsch, I'd be looking elsewhere. For the amount of speaker you are buying, they should be looking to make a deal. The Klipsch are nice. Just be sure you have to time to listen to them. Some people don't like their sound due to the horn tweeter. It can cause ear-fatigue and make watching movies difficult.

Since you're replacing a Bose system, you need to allow your self time to adjust to the new speakers. I'm assuming this is a cube speaker system (acoustimass). They don't image very well and are designed not to image very well. Bose is very upfront about this when it comes to their satellite speakers. They market it as an advantage. I don't think you'll find anyone here who agrees with that. I imagine that having poor imaging allows the maker to hide flaws in the speaker design (just a guess).

If you don't fully understand a little on imaging, here's a site that has a quick definition.

This is from that site:
Imaging

Imaging describes the extent to which a stereo system reproduces the timbre and location of the individual instruments accurately and realistically. In a system with superior imaging, you should be able to close your eyes and envision where the instruments were positioned on stage, from right to left. Everyone who really appreciates music in an automotive environment cares about stereo imaging — from the casual enthusiast to the serious competitor.

You may not need to have a 5.1 setup consisting of all floor-standing speakers. Bookshelf speakers can offer the necessary performance for the rear speakers. This will free up money for improvements that will enhance the entire system. Having 5.1 tower setup is cool, it's just not necessary.

It also looks as if Aperion is revamping their line of speakers. I'd still give them a looksie and check it all out.

Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe I should give Aperion a try.

I do find it hard not to buy the Infinity Beta series since they are about 50% off with no tax and free shipping. That being said, I want to be happy with my purchase.

If you can swing both and are able to return the Betas, why not get both and then audition side-by-side. That would be the best situation. Both sets of speakers would need time to "break-in" (which I believe in for speakers) anyways. You would also be able to see the finish on them and how well they fit into your room.

There are lots of people that enjoy these speakers and view them as exceptional finds on a cost to performance ratio.

I really appreciate everyone's help. I was very close to ordering the Aperion's, but realized it was hard to justify the price difference after buying a new Reciever & TV.

Anyway, here is what I bought:

Sanus BF24B $49.99 1 $49.99
548399041 Infinity BETA C360 BK $219.88 1 $219.88
542399047 Infinity BETA 40 BKS $199.88 2 $399.76
549799299 Infinity SW-12 BK $399.88 1 $399.88
542199682 Infinity BETA 20 BK $119.88 2 $239.76

Subtotal: $1,309.27 (free shipping & no tax)

I hope this will be a worthy upgrade and will compliment my new Yamaha well.

Sounds like a plan. Enjoy!

(If I were to get an Aperion center again, I'd rebuild my entertainment center so there'd be room for the 634-VAC instead of the 533-VAC.)

Infinity is owned by Harman International, so I'm sure they will sound great.

Another brand to consider is PSB if there is a dealer near you.

or

I have this setup with the B15 monitors as surrounds and I really enjoy my system.

For a sub, I would check into Outlaw, HSU, and SVS
