Well, I don't know. I just received Beowulf this morning :D Sweeeet.

And I'm hoping Sweeney Todd stays on track for HD. :D

HD rock on! :p

They are still coming out like that because they have been in production for months. It isn't like they spit these things out in a week or two. Toshiba doesn't control what gets released, they simply ceased production of the hardware - the studios are in charge of what movies get released and when so if they had a movie that has been scheduled to be released exclusively on one format for months now, that won't change. If they decide to releaese something on BD also, expect to see it at a later date - especially when it comes to Universal releases in the US. Now that the war is over, the last few exclusives should die off very quickly. I am still waiting for them to announce when There Will Be Blood will be out on BD, as it is also currently scheduled for SD and HD DVD only.

*edit: See this thread also:

http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41677

It mentions that some studios may still be obligated by contract to release on HD DVD only at this time.

For those of us who didn't buy HD DVD, I see Costco has the Toshiba for $79 with two movies in the box. Let's see, that's about $30 for the player... less than the sales tax for most stand-alone BD players:rolleyes:

Geno: Did you forget about the five mail-in? If purchased before 2-29 it qualifies. That's seven movies and the player for $79. At $10 per (ridiculously low price for HD movies), that's a grand total of $9 for the player!

As an aside, Amazon just lowered their prices of:
- Ultimate Matrix (5 discs) to $49
- Harry Potter 1-5 (7 discs) to $71
- Planet Earth (4 discs) to $29

Let the HD bargains roll on! 50-60-70-80% off!!!

That's great! $9 a disc that you won't be able to play in a few years because there are no players....sounds like a good plan  Sorry, I don't see that as a bargain. Make sure you buy an extra player.

Sorry j. I have yet to buy a player that only lasted me "a few years." Never. Anyway I'm covered with two A35's w/ 14 movies @ $338. :D

And let us not forget the upconverting prowess of the ABT1018 for all those useless SD's I have. :D At these prices I'll have a library of 200 HD's for a measly 1k before I know it...not that that's remotely the goal I (I stand against conspicuous consumption).

j, you certainly have changed your tune. It was just a year ago you prodded me to but the 2900 for $300 (no free movies, btw). If HD has died...how long will it be for SACD and SD to follow? There will always be SACD and SD players available on the used market. Isn't it a bit premature for that? Let us enjoy our movies in HD glory (no 1.0, 2.0 etc:D) in peace (and at our bargain basement prices)! Anyhow, your sig says you have an A2. What's up with that. Or are you just toying with us? :p

It takes time to stop a production chain and at times, new contracts.

I have both players. There are a few movies that I want that just came out and or only on hd dvd, american gangsta and beowulf. Show I buy now or wait till they come out on blu ray, if they ever do. How long do you all think it will take for the already made hd exclusives to arrive on blu ray?

I have had a few players that only lasted months...and not no name brands either. But for the most part, most have lasted a long time. They will not last forever though. MY 2900 is still going strong :D

I have changed my tune for sure, which is why I have the A2 :) SACD won't likely be around much longer, though that won't be a problem if we get some sort of lossless or new HD format to replace it. SD will go away for sure.

Buy the HD now so you can enjoy them. If and when it comes out on Blu, you can replace what you have if the HD player breaks and by then, you could pick those Blu up used at a good price.
