Please work with me if you can. If not, please leave me alone to explore without having to suffer abuse, and I'll try to do the same.
Dont count on it brother, notice how the thread is no longer about the Shanling amp,the bulk of this thread is now about dbt's,perceptual research, placebo effect blah blah blah:rolleyes:.

You'll quickly learn to ignore the bait questions.

Yes, I'm getting that.

I realized this thread has been about two topics for a while (maybe from page one!). The points about dbt's,perceptual research, placebo effect and such have been an intro to the debate between objectivists and subjectivists and so has been useful for me.

I feel for the next person who, like me, finds this archived thread while searching for info on the Shanling amp b/c as a source for that info, it has been quite diluted. (and I'll own my part in that).

:)

Is that integrated amplifier a hybrid with tubes for the preamp stage and class A/B transistor amplifier for the output stage?

It's really an SS integrated with a built-in tube buffer for the unbalanced inputs. The balanced inputs bypass the tubes and go straight to the SS pre section.
I have to admit I do not know what class it runs in. I assume A/B, but that is just an assumption.

I have not tried the balanced inputs yet. I'm curious to hear it w/o the tubes in the signal path.

If it runs warm to hot and meets the specifications listed in power, it's class A/B. If it runs cooler it might be class H or some other derivitive of Class A/B that is more efficient. To achieve the power ratings it has in Class A it would have to weigh about 150 pounds.:D

It's hard to judge from the outside how hot it runs, it has such massive heat sinks that are encased in a thick aluminum chassis with alot of air space.
I'd say it gets warm, but not hot. My cat thinks its a good bed for him.

The thing does weigh 66 pounds! :)

Oh, and just to get some sense of scale, the cabinet is nearly eight inches deep.

I assume you mean height (from top to bottom) as the depth would be front to back.

It's most likely Class A/B. A Class A amplifier that size would only be able to output around 50-70 watts per channel, perhaps less.

Hi Brett A, hows your amp going? Have you found any reviews yet? What front end are you running into it? I wonder if there are any other guys with one who have any comments on it.

Cheers James

I'm feeding it with a Rotel RCD 1070 CD player through a pair of Siltech New York interconnects. The Rotel is a very good player, if not quite on par with the quality of the Shanling.

I also have an old Dynaco tuner hooked in.

Right now I have my turntable hooked up too. It's nothing special, a Pioneer PL 550 that I run through the phono section of an old NAD 3020 integrated, but it allows me to listen to some of the stuff I have only on vinyl.

My happiness with this system just gets greater w/every listen!

I haven't come across anything new about the Shanling online yet.

How about you? Are you enjoying yours?

Yes Brett A i'm loving my one. I'd like to listen to it against a Plinius or something in that class to see how it came out. I haven't seen any other reviews yet but I guess its still a new amp to the market and it may take a year or so for anything to come out.

I did put a mini review in http://www.audioreview.com

You could add any comments you have experienced? Just a thought.

Regards James.

Are you still using this amp? Are there any others of you using it?
