Sony BDPS500 Player

I have a few questions on this product and I hope you can help.
I am told the average load time after initial setup of this product is
40 seconds. (info provided by sony canada).
Also will this product load a disc if only the power cord is plugged in and
the unit not connected to a home theatre system? I ask this because when
I powered up my unit and tried to open/close the disc tray nothing would happen until I turned on the rest of my system. (perhaps I didn't wait long
enough after turning on the sony to try and open/close the disc tray).

I do like the product but these things make me wonder.

It is a very slow unit. 40 seconds to boot up sounds about right. The tray opening has nothing to do with your equipment being on or off. The tray will not open for about 40 seconds after pressing the power button.

Personally I find the sluggishness of the Sony S300 and S500 to be unacceptable and I would spend my money on something else such as one of the Panasonic Blu-Ray players.

Agreed, the DMP-BD30 is infinitely faster than the Sony standalone players.

If you're not in a rush, the DMP-BD50 will be out later this year and will be compliant with all features of all discs, providing an internet connection is present.

The players will only continue to get faster.

I've always found on the Sony BDP-S1 it is best to remove any discs prior to shutting it off. Failure to do so resulted in a significantly increased start-up the next time you try to use it. If you have the chance to take it back, you might want to try out the Panasonic BD players. They load / power up quite a bit faster.
