HDMI Connection Question

If I connect an HDMI cable out from my satellite receiver to my home theatre receiver, then do I also have to use the optical cable connection (for audio) out from my satellite receiver to my home theatre receiver to get 5.1? I thought that HDMI cable is good for video and audio. Is that correct?

All you need is the HDMI cable. It will pass both HD video and audio.

Depends on your receiver, whatcha running? I have my Sat. hooked up video direct to my switcher, and audio to the prepro via Optical In. It decodes EVERYTHING via optical.

An Onkyo receiver is being used...I don't know the model number though...

So, I took the HDMI cable from the satellite receiver and put it in HDMI1 in the receiver....then I took another HDMI cable out from the Blue Ray player and put it in HDMI2...then I took another HDMI cable OUT from the receiver to the TV...Do I still need to do optical from the DVD player to the receiver or should the HDMI cable take care of that?

The reason why I am asking is because I wasn't able to get 5.1 when I played a DVD...I'm thinking that if I run an optical cable from the DVD player to the receiver, then I should be able to get 5.1...correct?

Unless your receiver is capable of decoding multi-channel souund from an HDMI feed, which most can't, you'll have to use another digital feed such as optical, coax, or whatever it takes.

Otherwise, you'll get stereo.

I found the best way not to miss any audio is to connect any digital connections via optical/comp then set the reciever up to match, that with the HDMI you shouldn't miss a note.

The question is should I run through my 3300 or straight to the TV? would there be a difference if any?
