Hello there, I'm new, I have a question. I have the pioneer VSX-1016TXV-K receiver 7.1 channel, 120 watt per channel. I'm not using this for surround sound. I have two tower speakers 150 watt each, and I am looking to get a sub woofer but have no clue what to look for or what the receiver can handle. I have no clue about all of the tech stuff, I'm not sure what watts per channel means. Now when it gives you watts per channel does that mean not to go over that watt per speaker? if so I've already done that. Can anyone please help me and give me some guidance on what to look for, or what kind of sub woofer and what watts , I dont want anything high tec just something thats gives more bass. Thanks a bunch.

Your speakers don't have a wattage, and the wattage on the sub also isn't the way to shop for one because it doesn't really tell you everything about its capabilities. The FIRST question is HOW MUCH? How big is your room and how much bass are you looking for? Then we can help you figure out what will be best in your price range.

How many watts?
A subwoofers performance is not based solely on watts. A quality subwoofer must have

a) an excellent enclosure design
b) the appropriate amp for the enclosures design
c) the driver's design

Like j_garcia stated, how large of a room is this system going in? Any openings to other areas of the house?

Budget?

Wattage isn't a very important specification on a subwoofer, at least not in the terms you are thinking. You can connect any powered subwoofer you want to your receiver. Most subwoofers are powered, you'd be hard pressed to find a passive one, and trust me you don't want one.

Some subwoofer brands to avoid would be Polk Audio, Klipsch, and anything with the word digital in the name.:D

Any of the subwoofer manufacturers that Mazersteven mentioned are good choices.

This would be going in the living room which is about 11'X19', I dont want to be spending a bundle, so I want something that is affordable with lots of bass. There is opening to kitchen off of living room. :)

That one would be very easy to put together. If you don't want to put it together I am sure you can find someone to take 5 minutes to do that job. It should have a ton of bass.:D

If they have any left, check out the Cadence CSX-12 or CSX-15...$400 for the 15 but in the deals area here, there is a thread showing it is on sale for $370. Is that the kind of affordable you are talking about? I'd expect it to be relatively comparable to the one Seth linked from PE.

That is a good sub for the price. It probably won't knock your socks off in a room that size, but it should do the job.

He means it comes just like you see in the picture - as a bunch of parts that you have to put together yourself. They also sell most of them as fully assembled units, but for the price difference, it isn't difficult to put together.

The av123 x-sub is great, but your room is a bit bigger so like j_garcia said, it probably won't knock your socks off. In addition to some of the good subs mentioned already, the HSU STF-2 or SVS PB12 are excellent subs for the money and should do fine in that room.

av123 x-sub ($199) or HSU STF-1 ($254). They probably come out close as av123 shippings rates are a bit high.
