SPL, by far.

And something else before either of those.

I would go with the Velodyne SPL 1200. Audioholics staff members did a review on the SPL series. Just do a search in the review section.

And just in case anyone jumps in with an SVS or av123 "recommendation," since every subwoofer post nowadays is flooded with SVS or av123 are the best threads, I would say go with the Velodyne SPL 1200, it has superior dynamics and transient response.

Not to be a d:ck, but I don't follow your logic. Are you suggesting the SPL 1200 "has superior dynamics and transient response" compared to the DLS-5000R, an SVS or AV123 sub?

Are you opposed to suggesting any products from either of these two companies or just advocating the SPL Velo? Just curious as it comes across more as an "anti-internet direct company" statement and less of a suggestion... -TD

Some questions regarding your two choices. Do you have any restrictions that would require you to lean towards a smaller enclosure? What are the room dimensions that you're working with? Do you have a specific budget? What are your listening preferences (music:movies ratio)? Are you looking at the Velos specifically for any reason or would you consider additional companies offerings?

The answers to these might help in recommending something that would best suit your needs... -TD

Damn that WAF! :D I'm sure the SPL would be more appealing from an aesthetics standpoint and is likely a bit easier to hide if you (she) wanted to.

While it might be a bit small in that size room, it'll likely suit the bill for both uses. Are you considering auditioning other mfgrs. subs or just the Velos? Furrycute's input notwithstanding, there are some other subs that you may want to consider as well, some may not even be internet direct... -TD

I consider Hsu's business practice to be VERY respectable. Unlike some other internet direct companies that have already been named.
So by that statement, am I to understand SVS and AV123 both have acted in an unprofessional manner at some point? I suppose that is debatable, as I know there was some issues some time ago here with SVS and AH regarding some undesirable business practices, however I haven't heard the same for AV123.

Unless you specifically (not something you read on a forum at some point) are familiar with their unethical practices, completely disregarding their product offerings is overreacting a bit. I'm not saying you have or haven't had problems w/either or both of these companies, I'm just suggesting that if you have not, you may want to make sure you have all sides of the story before you disregard a company and their offerings.

I have dealt with one of these two personally a few times and have found their products and service to be some of the best I've experienced regardless of the product/service. That doesn't mean others have had the same experience, but drawing on my own experience and others that I know personally, that is typically what I'll base my decisions and recommendations on... -TD

Yes, I did read this some time ago (wow, didn't think it was almost a whole year ago...) and this is what I referred to previously, but again, while I don't disregard what was said by Clint, Ron Stimpson also had a rather differing viewpoint on SVS' website after this incident. Having not been personally involved nor knowing truly what took place (again, both sides have their own views), I can only draw my conclusions on what I and others I know personally have experienced.

As to what goes on at AVS, it's almost like high school cliques over there at times, members as well as mods. While I have definitely found some useful information and have tried to provide some as well, I have found frequenters of AVS to be far more opinionated and take things a bit more personally than any other forum I've ever been a part of... -TD

Well tom, if you find that the opinions of

1) the owner of audioholics, and that of
2) the owner of avsforum

are not trustworthy, then honestly I don't understand why you are on these forums.

You remember the saying, goes something like this: Better to stay silent than speak and prove yourself the fool?

There are only a few hundred members here that have heard compared various Velodynes to other 'lesser' known subs. My experience was the *** wooping the the Elemental Designs A5-350 put on a Velodyne DLS-4000. Both are the same price.

I am not sure what your intention is. You communication thus far is very guarded and not forthcoming about what targets you are trying to aim for.

Velo makes a damn good sub-woofer. Their name has tremendous cache but in my opinion there are better subs out there for substantially less money.

Maybe you work for Velo, maybe you are a guy that knows he can get a rise out of people that have a serious love for A/V.

Great, when all else fails, attack the messenger instead of the message. Classic.

I never said I liked the lower end Velodynes. I only like the higher end Velodynes, their SPL and DD series.

And no, I do not work for Velodyne. I wish I did though, that way I can get a free Velodyne DD sub from them.

To the original poster, I warned you about these SVS and av123 "recommendations," here they come...

And just to put matters into a better perspective, I suggest you have a look at this post, quite illuminating.

And as to the sub choices, I would stick with the Velodyne SPL 1200R, you have chosen a very capable subwoofer from a top notch subwoofer company.
And your point is? That is the only problem with your posts in this thread so far, You HAVE NOT MADE A POINT, nor a contribution. Please do something to FORWARD the thread. You are instigating for some reason. I wonder what your motives are.

These recommendations for other companies are coming from end users regardless of the above link.
