Why won't anyone let me work for them?

Ahh, that's all right highfi, no one expects much from you anyway! :p (That's just a joke you know, homey).

Cookies, huh? What kind?
My wife expects that i throw the underwear with the brown stains on em in the trash or burn them instead of the laundry hamper,i gotta work on that some more

The cookies i mowed down on were lace cookies,i think their made from oatmeal, they are wafer thin & tasty as all get out, every time the wife make's em i eat em all up quick, their my favorite.

THANKS highfi!

Errr, with you, as always, it has to be a qualified thank you. Thank you for the latter part...the cookie info...I think. If the latter gives you the former, nevermind. :p

I will never forget the time I got a job and there were aprox 75 applications for the driving job. After I started I found out that the first elimation round was done by 4yr old at home.....the applications were "graded" by a child.....if the application didnt meet the childs standards you would never even get looked at by adult. I guess that reinforces the neat penmanship thing that we all heard in school.

I dont have a clue weather Seth is reading these posts (as there are many) but I keep telling my son to find a job that he likes and show up at start time 2-3 times a week. If there is someone that cant show up on time or calls in sick or just looking for more help someday, guess who will be on the bosses mind first ?

Good Luck!

Job hunting jinjuku. Show up at the site...and maybe they'll hire you on the spot. Just another alternative...but a good one if all else fails.

Yeah, I had to read that one twice too. I was thinking treejohnny was a man of leisure! ;)

I was going to post, but was interupted.

To clear the air. I don't dress like a goon. I believe the reason I am having trouble finding work is a combination of my lack of motivation and my lacking work experience. These last few days have been an exeption to the former. I have been looking very hard in a different city (Lafayette, Indiana). Lafayette has a lower unemployment rate and new jobs are created quite often in that city.

Why is your motivation lacking? I would think being unemployed would be pretty motivating.

Lafayette, well West Lafayette, is where Purdue is at. With the size of Purdue, I would think there would be lots of jobs around there - resturants, bars, stores, etc.

Boiler up!

Don't know what else to say on that one, other than man-up and get motivated to succeed. Getting the right job is 20% luck and 80% attitude. It's obvious from all your posts on this site that you are a very capable, competent individual, so there should be no reason why you can't land a good one somewhere. I sincerely wish you the best of luck - I know the economy is sagging somewhat, but there are industries that are thriving - you just have to do the research. :)

I can understand the "lack of motivation." Years ago I lost my job at the bank where I worked, basically my whole team got downsized, but of course they wouldn't call it that (we were all just fired, a few at a time). The bank was being scrutized by regulators, we couldn't book new accounts, etc. The place was a real bottom feeder, one of the most predatory credit card companies out there. I was miserable every day I went there, and was somewhat relieved to get out. Having had it up to my eyeballs with collections, I decided to take some time and just chill out, decompress. I had an annuity that was worth enough to live on for a year or so, so I just dropped out. It was a great most-of-a-year; I slept in, then went to the mall to watch the girls in minskirts!:D Almost every day I caught a matinee, then read, listened to music, etc etc.

Of course, eventually the money started to run out and I was forced to contemplate returning to work. Needless to say, after most of a year living the life of leisure I didn't relish getting back to the ol' grind again. So naturally, I displayed little or no enthusiasm in my first half dozen interviews. Ah, I'll wait until something more interesting comes along, I figured. But the bills didn't stop. And as I got closer to broke you'd think I'd have tried harder, but it's hard to sell yourself after being oow that long. I probably started to look a bit desperate after awhile, and that's not appealing to an employer (I know- I've spend years doing the hiring for various restaurants).

Eventually I found something that didn't totally suck, and once I got my groove back I made the leap back into management. It took some time, but you just gotta be determined and realize it's a process!

Start out by picking one likely candidate, and make a completely honest effort to do well in the interview. Don't sabotage it, really put yourself out there, even if you have to fake it at first.

It gets easier, Seth.:)

Nice story Rob. Well, at least the revelation part. Well, on second thought, it is all the parts that make it a story...so nice story. :)

So, you came to a crossroads...and had an epiphany. Hopefully you've found peace again. Thanks for sharing that. Maybe Seth (and other young members) will see the bumps in the road will pass, and that their despair ought to be shortlived.

Cliff Notes Version:

Life sucks, now get over it!
Well major, that's not really the shorthand version of my post. C'mon, admit it. You know that. :D

And you don't really want to spread that energy, that message, do you? Life's what you make of it, it does not "suck", neither by fiat, nor design, unless you make it so. :)

Sheesh. Between you and Rob, opposites are revealed, aren't they? Like Bert and Ernie, or Felix and Oscar. :D

I think the Major means: enough of the whining, get on your horse and move on. The "suck" part is just a metaphor for the ups and downs of life in general. You know, if life gives you lemmons, make lemmonade.:D

Hmmm. Well that's one interpretation strat. But I've heard that metaphor before, and I've never inferred the "ups" in it. Never. Maybe they're there. Maybe it's just me.

I've always taken it to mean: life sucks. It's all bad...a real downer. Accept your miserable fate, and carry on. There is no hope, no redemption.

Life sucks. That's a plain enough statement.

Btw strat, has the recent frost attached another "m" to the words "lemons" and "lemmonade?" I thought given our shortage of citrus, the powers that be have mandated an extra consonant...so that we feel like we're getting more. :p

No, when life gives you lemons...

Cut off the peel and get some vodka. It's martini time!

Sorry, L-E-M-O-N-S, there got it! We use limes down here, either Key Limes or the garden (no pun) variety.

So Seth should just have himself a martini and get over it!;)
