I have an oppertunity to get a Samsung BPD-1400 by "cashing" in my Amex Rewards points (hence no direct cost to me). I am wondering if people think this would be the way to go OR ir would be better to cash the points in for Amex gift certificates and get a different Blu-ray player from a commercial venue. The gift certificates would equate to $300 and I am looking to keep total under $400 (i.e. an additional $100 out of my pocket).

If you want one right now, I'd go for the Panny BD-30. I found a number of them for $400 new with a quick search, including Amazon. Don't forget the 5 free movies.

I have the 1400 and so far I like it. It will do bitstream ouputs so if your processor can decode the new formats you can get both TrueHD and Master DTS. I have heard a couple of people had issues playing the new DieHard movie but I have not seen it yet so I cannot speak of the problem. Sounded like a firmware problem to me. The panny is also well spoken of as well as the PS3 which in my opinion the only weakness is the bitstream and that may not be an issue for you.

I have the 1400 and it is a nice player and have not had a problem with it and you can get 8 free blurays with it, but you have to send in for them, you can get the paper work off of www.samsung.com. Hope this helps.

Should probably supply some additional info:

Reciever is Denon 3805
Front projector is Epson 550
Impact Acoustics HDMI switcher

So new formats not critical at this time. Have considered PS3, but not huge consol gamer (more PC)

With the gift certificates will not be able to do on-line

Will start researching the Panny.

I'd definitely go for the Panny. (It's profile 1.1!) The Sammys have a reputation for bugginess and issues with many Blu-Ray discs. Samsung and LG were the ones that had issues initially with Fox's BD+ Blu-Ray discs. The Sony BDP-S300 is reliable but sloooow and lacks many features.

I also use the denon 3805 and considered moving to a hdmi 1.3 compatable receiver for full hd audio decoding. My understanding is that the newer Panny BD50 will decode internally and send the signal via analog to the 3805 for full DTS MA. Here is a recent thread in which it was discussed: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39912

I have the 1400, and never once had any problems.

I'll sell you my BD-P1400. I've only used it a handful of times and I still have the box, packaging, manual, etc.

I'll throw some good movies in there too (300, Blood Diamond, etc)

Panny BD-30 is bitstream only. Won't work with his Denon.
