Hi,
I just bought the onkyo HTiB over the weekend and I am having a little of problem installing it.

I have a Onkyo HT-R520 receiver, Comcast On demand cable box, Gamestop HD System Selector

The Comcast On Demand Box is plugged into Video 2 of my Av Receiver by component cable. The Optical Audio cable is running from the back of the cable box into the optical in 2.
The receiver is plugged into my Samsung tv by component cables.
The Gamestop HD System Selector is still to be to by connected.

Ok. Now thats out of the way I cant get sound coming out from the speakers. It still comes through the TV. I have tried pressing the Digital Input button till it said OPT2 but that did not work.

You didn't mention any audio connections to the TV so you shouldn't get sound from the TV unless:
- You have the cable from the wall connected to the TV cable/antenna input and the TV input on antenna (usually just labeled 'tv').
- You have audio connections from the cable box directly the TV.

The digital audio assignment of opt2 to Video2 must be done but you may have to also change a setting in the cable box to output digital audio.

Ok i am officially lost now.

before i got the HT-R520 receiver. i just ran component cables from the cable box into the tv. but right now the components are plugged into the HT-R520 receiver. Right now i can watch TV like before but i can get the surround sound speakers to play any sounds. am i missing a cable?

Component cables are for video - a set of 3, one red, one blue, and one green.

If you get the sound from the tuner through the TV speakers then you have an audio connection from the receiver to the TV. You don't need ANY audio connection to the TV to use the receiver to play the sound through the speakers connected to it. Did you happen to connect analog audio cables from one of the Video out jacks on the back of the receiver to an audio input on the TV?

Ok. i took out the audio that was plugged into the tv and still nothing out of the speakers. i went through all the digital input channels. COAX, OPT1, OPT2, OPT 3 and no sound. This is whats plugged in as of now.

The set of 3 component cables (the red, blue, green ones), are connected to the Receiver by component video Out. "Video 1/2/3 In" are going from the receiver to the cable box. And the cable box and reciever are connected by digital optical in.

For digital audio you need to verify:
1. Cable box is set to output digital audio. On mine there is a menu setting called 'digital audio out' that can be set to Dolby Digital or Other (which is PCM). Set it to Dolby Digital.
2. Press the digital input button after pressing whichever input selector you are using for the cable box (video 1, 2, or 3) and make sure it says opt1 or whichever optical input the cable box is connected to. Make sure that no other input selector is assigned to the same optical input.
3. Press and hold the digital input button until it shows the digital input format. It should be set to Auto (which should be the default anyway).

That is all it takes to get digital audio but there is one catch that may or may not apply to your situation and that is that some cable channels, even on 'digital cable', do not broadcast digital audio. If you were tuned to one of them, you'd get no sound unless you also connect the red/white analog audio cables to the same Video input and have the input format properly set to Auto.

Is it possible for you to make me some hook up diagram or guide so I can make sure everything is going to to right place? Would it be any help if i sprung for an HDMI cable? Heres what I have to hook up:
Samsung DLP HL-S46765
Motorola Dual-Tuner DVR High-Definition Set-Top DCT6412
The Gamestop HD System Selector (Has all my consoles hooked up all have component cables)
Onkyo HT-R520 receiver

Start with one component at a time - the cable box is the first one to do.

It shouldn't be difficult at all and I've listed the connections. Your manual should have connection diagrams too.

- component video cables from cable box to receiver.
- component video cables from receiver component video out to TV.
- Optical audio from cable box to receiver and then do the assignment.

You still haven't mentioned whether you changed any menu settings in the cable box and that is probably the remaining issue.

The options available under Audio Output are. TV speakers, Stereo, and Advanced.
Right now its on stereo and im still not getting any sound coming from the speakers.

What options are under Advanced in the cable box menu?

To make sure the cable box is outputting sound use analog audio cables to the same input you've assigned the digital audio.

It sounds like an her/or proposition here. It sounds like it's either TV speakers OR everything else.

My guess is that for the sound to come out of the TV you need to set it to "TV speakers" but you will have to run some sort of interconnect from the STB to the TV, most likely a red/white analog interconnect. ..but then again, HDMI might have a hand in this confusion also if it's present.

you may want to become a bit more familiar with the STB manual...
