Three Times a Lady by Lionel Ritchey? As for that song, it's more like an upbeat, pop ballad from the 70's if that makes any sense. It opens with just a simple tune in the upper piano octaves. It's an electric piano that sounds almost like a portable piano you'd get for a kid. Then the guys starts singing and it's just him and the piano the rest of the song. The voice seems very familiar, as if he sang for a popular band then went on his own. That's why I originally thought of Donald Fagan. It's not Micheal McDonald either, but in that vein. I know when I find it, I'm going to have a "DOH" moment. I have a feeling it's going to be a very popular singer/musician from the 70's. It's almost like it's on the tip of my tongue but I have a mental block and as soon as I hear the name, I'll know immediately. I've got to check Loggins/Messina, too.
I can see that. Your suggestions are relevant and damn good. With these and following links from them, I've created a list of about $3-400 worth of albums I need to get.I'm rattling my brain here!
I grew up listening to Lionel Ritchey with and without the Commodores. I don't think it's him but I will check some of his songs I'm not really familiar with. It's not a bad guess because the electric piano in the song I'm thinking of has a real Ray Charles vibe to it, think of the piano in the background during "Shake your Tailfeather" on the Blues Brother's Soundtrack. I hate having such a vague idea of what I'm trying to describe. It's frustrating.Three Times a Lady by Lionel Ritchey?
That incredible piano sound comes from a Rhodes piano, at one time called a Fender Rhodes after acquisition by Fender, it's being resurrected again by an independent company. It's the most recorded electric piano, and it's sonic signature is unique.I grew up listening to Lionel Ritchey with and without the Commodores. I actually sampled a fair amount of Micheal McDonald's music in the last couple of days. He does have a distinctive voice, right era, right genre, just not "right". Same with Billy Joel.Michael McDonald. Saw him in concert a year ago. The guy writes brilliantly, and always has, is an accomplished pianist, and either you love his voice , or not. A true Renaissance man.
Mmmm. Billy Joel? I liked him when I was 16.
Gary Wright?I actually sampled a fair amount of Micheal McDonald's music in the last couple of days. He does have a distinctive voice, right era, right genre, just not "right". Same with Billy Joel.
I have a feeling it's going to come from one of those obscure 70's bands, Player, Orleans, 10cc, Ambrosia, etc. or one of the members who made a solo effort.
The thing about the piano, it's not really the full Rhodes sound. It really sounds more like one of those portable electronic pianos that you'd buy for a kid.
You bet. I've never won anything Dave! You've made my day! Thanks. Good jam btw. They just played the song.
King Harvest - Dancing in the Moonlight.
Naturally, I had so much wrong. There was a band playing. I guess with all the loud mechanical noise at work, wearing earplugs and the poor quality of my beat up POS boombox radio, I didn't really hear much but the piano and singing. But thank goodness, now I can sleep. (Oh Boy, Sleep! That's where I'm a Viking!)
As for the disc, I have to declare Stratman, shooting darned near the mark with so many suggestions, the winner.
Johnd, can I offer you a Silicon Optics Reon HQV Benchmark DVD as a thank you as well?
King Harvest!!! Duh!! I know that song, I almost had it, but the song "Moondance" by Van Morrison kept popping into my head. How frustrating!! Dave, thanks!!! Man it's not necessary, just helping out a friend. They just played the song.

This is what happens when a person is an Audioholic.I have sampled some of the music mentioned in this thread and have decided I hate all of you . I have purposely been avoiding finding more music I enjoy until I am willing to spend money on more music and then this happens .
Yeah - thats right I am complaining about this site making me spend money! Who is making themselves look stupid now .
I could tell from listening to your suggestions that you were pretty darn close, especially given the terrible (and quite often misleading) description I gave you. That's quite an achievement. The singer (Dave "Doc" Robinson) does sound like the singer from Looking Glass (Elliot Lurie), the group that did Brandy. In fact both bands have similar, but distinct (if that's possible) sound. One of the guys from King Harvest went on to found Orleans of "You're Still The One" fame. Yup, that was a Rhodes piano, you'll find it in similar groups such as Three Dog Night (which you really should check out) and Orleans.
Here's another: Blue Swede "Hooked on a feeling."
That would be me. I was looking for one song, now I'm going to end up spending hundreds of dollars.Who is making themselves look stupid now .
