The singer (Dave "Doc" Robinson) does sound like the singer from Looking Glass (Elliot Lurie), the group that did Brandy.
LOL, Brandy!:D I had forgotten that one. It was on the radio almost as much as Stairway to Heaven when I was a teen.

I still love this song as it brings back many memories, the story itself is quite poignant.

As long as you are making a purchase list, how about Ben Folds Five (1995).
I always have hundreds of dollars worth of CDs in my save for later pile at amazon :)

I have to admit I'm not familiar with them, but from what I just listened to they're not bad. I may give them a try.

I cheated a little bit and went the cheap route. I ordered this 7 disc compilation set from CD Universe that includes a lot of the songs in this thread. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1118488 I already have a lot of these songs, but this set fills in a lot of gaps. I will gradually add the depth to my collection as time goes on, but this gets me started.

I also ordered Earth, Wind and Fire "Gratitude" on SACD. I'm really excited about that, as an EWF fan.

In that case, you would enjoy a DVD that I have. EWF live on a double-bill with Chicago.

Most likely. I've been hooked on EWF since the early 80's and had a nearly complete collection on vinyl, going back to their first album. I haven't even heard of that DVD before. I'll be sure to check it out.

Dave:

Received the HQV DVD in the mail today. It is much appreciated. Anytime you're in the Chicago/Milwaukee area, look me up. Thanks again. John

I just made a recommendation in the "20 albums you should own" thread of a great singer/pianist. She is more of a blues/jazz singer than rock, but I thought I would mention her here as well because she is amazing.

Nina Simone:

I'm surprised that I haven't heard of her before. She's got quite a discography and has played with some of Jazz' greatest icons. She is definitely on my list.

You are not seriously suggesting that this is the first you have heard of Nina Simone? That is the jazz equivalent of just now discovering Elvis!

I've got some of her stuff, it's great, she's an icon. While you're at it Dave, check out a drummer named Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, he's played with "everybody" including the Beatles by his account, he's played with Nina Simone and a host of by-gone music icons.

What is an "Elvis"???:D

But seriously, I realize this is a gigantic lapse on my part. In my defense, I've gone for 15 or 20 years without a decent system and until recently, hadn't put any time or thought into my media collection. It wasn't until Dec. '05 that I even bought a DVD player. Before that I only owned about 3 VCR tapes. All I had was a bunch of CD's that filled most of my listening needs and most of those my wife bought.

But now I'm back, in a big way. This thread is just a part of the awakening process from a long audio coma as described in my very first introductory thread on AH. I've taken care of my equipment needs, now I am exploring the media. But old habits die hard. I don't have any Blu-Ray discs for my PS3 because I can't bear to part with $30-35 for a disc.

I know what you mean about getting back into it, since I got my good speakers I have been coming home from work and putting on a cd just about every afternoon.

My wife suggested we needed another order from CD universe, this one bigger than the last. I included a Nina Simone in this order, as well as AJA, Gaucho and Nightfly. This also brings me closer to a full set of EWF and Spyro Gyra.

I just ordered Spyro Gyra, Morning Dance, Freetime and Carnaval. I already have Catching the Sun and Breakout. I used to have a full set of Spyro on vinyl, up until Breakout, and I think I darned near wore out the grooves playing them over and over.

Since I started this thread, I've spent well over $400 on discs. I think I'll take some time to digest these before ordering anything else.

Dave: Ran my first test with the HQV disc you sent me: Passed everything but two tests: color and diagonal jaggies.

I will have to go into the service menu of my pj to make the color corrections (thanks a lot! jk :)), and the diagonal jaggies are caused either by keystoning (I know, I know) or the scaler in my pj. I don't know if I can bypass my scaler, so I may have to live with it...it's fairly minor, and I'll be in the market for a new pj when the bulb goes in this one (up to $800.00 now...can you imagine?) For 2 1/2 times that price, I can get a 1080 pj!

So I'll live with the minor jaggies until the bulb wears out, and keep adjusting the color til I get it right. Thanks again for the free dvd!

I'm glad you got some good use out of it. To be honest, I have no clue how to use the color bars to adjust color. Is there a reference you are supposed to match each color against?
