Bits and Pieces... time for satellites!

Right now I'm running a 2.0 system with older, newly repaired Paradigm Phantom v2 floorstanding loudspeakers. I've had 'em for years, and have always liked them. But the room is pretty big, 16'x20' (10' ceiling), and it needs some more sound.

I dont have the funds to buy a whole 5.1 system right now, so I'm going to piece things together as I can afford them. I figure my first purchase (hopefully done this weekend) should be a pair of rear satellite speakers.

Due to the configuration of the room (and the ill-placement of doors) I cant use floor stands. I'll have to mount these on the wall at least 8' high, so I'll need a mount that allows me to aim them downward.

Anyway, this is where your recommendations come in. Like I said, I'm on a budget, but I want something that wont make me hate watching movies or playing games. So, suggestions?

*edit* I was looking at the Polk stuff from outpost/frys but, really, I just don't know enough to know if those should be embraced like a long lost friend, or spat upon like a Bose salesman.

What budget? And how about a pair of Paradigm Di-pole rears?

Hi Luth,

What did you do to get the Paradigms repaired?

Budget, well... pretty bare. I figure $1k (max) for the whole 5.1 combined. Also, asking my opinion on So-And-So speakers is... silly. :) I don't know anything. I need your opinions! :)

Rickster: Actually, I misspoke. I went to the local Paradigm dealer and talked with them about getting replacement components.

How about using the Paradigms somewhere else in the house (Basement, Garage, other room) and purchasing a 5.1 system for that $1K?

Well because the idea is to get a 5.1 system, use the Paradigms for the front L/R, and use it as a 7.1 system.

I think thats the system you suggested to me before. I don't have $1k to spend right now, at best I can come up with a few hundred. I guess I could wait another month and try to save up and buy it all at once, but I'm really eager to get audio now. :) I JUST finished my DIY home theatre, and all thats missing is audio. Heh, I feel like a kid on Christmas eve.

My advise is not to rush. I went without a subwoofer for a whole year before I purchased. I advise not to settle for something that's not going to make you happy in the long run. Maybe it will make you happy, I don't know. But I still say do it right the first time. :D

Well thats the thing, I certainly dont want to jump on the first thing I see, but I dont know how many months it'll be before I have audio, ya know? I can see going without a sub, but going without speakers is rough. Thats why I'd like to find a set of speakers that I can buy piece by piece as the money comes in.

Can you take some photo's of your room and I can recommend some speakers for you. You said the rear of the room had doors and openings?

Here's a dimension sketch I did up earlier. The dot represents a light, which is of no consequence, and the long light rectangle running through the length of the room is an air-vent, which hangs about a foot down from the 10' ceiling.

If there's anything else I can do to help you help me, let me know!:D
